Health Discount and Dental Discount Programs: Will They Help Someone Like Me?

Writen by Beverly Van Engelen Brett

There is a new health care delivery system on the market called “Consumer Driven Health Care,” more commonly known as Health and Dental Discount Programs. As with many cutting-edge concepts, this one has created a bit of controversy.

It will come as no surprise to learn that the people making the most noise on one side or the other of the issue are the ones who are make their living in the health benefits industry.

Unfortunately, this professional “siding up” just leaves the general population stuck in the middle, confused and wondering what is best for them.

In reality, there is no reason to be up in arms over the new Health and Dental Discount Programs. These programs are not meant for everyone, but rather they were designed specifically for the people who have slipped through the cracks in the current health care coverage system.

If you have health insurance now, keep it! If you can get comprehensive health insurance, get it.

If, however, you are in one of the following situations, becoming a member in a dental and/or health discount program may very well help you:

1. You have been turned down for all health insurance due to a pre-existing condition.

2. You have a pre-existing condition, have been accepted for “high risk” health insurance, and are left paying out of pocket for your care until (or unless) the cost reaches a set deductible that is very high (for example until you have paid $6,000/year out of pocket – or more).

3. You have health insurance, but you still have to pay full price for one or more of the following services: at the dentist, for new glasses or contact lenses, for your prescription medicine, for chiropractic care.

4. You already have one of the tax-free Health Savings Accounts set up, along with the required catastrophic health insurance policy, and you are paying full price – either out of pocket, or out of your HSA, for your health care until (or unless) you meet the high deductible of the health insurance policy.

5. You have talked with your insurance agent, have gone over your budget, and you truly cannot find traditional insurance coverage that you can afford.

If you are in one of the situations described above, by all means add health and/or dental discount programs to the options you look into.

As you would when selecting any service company or professional, it is important to do your homework. Check the internet web sites to see which health and dental discount companies have providers in your area.

Look at the value of the programs how much will you pay per month to be a member of a specific discounts program, and approximately what type of savings will you receive in the various care areas of care.

Find out if you have to sign a contract for a certain length of time on the discount program. See if the company offers any type of satisfaction guarantee.

Check into the company’s credentials in other words, how they stand with the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Health Alliance, and American Association of Dental Plans. Check to see if the company is listed with Dun & Bradstreet to make sure they are financially fit.

If you have any question about whether a discount program will work for your situation, contact a representative from both the benefit discounts company and the traditional health insurance industry.

Expect true professionals in either segment of the health benefits industry to show a willingness to investigate ALL the options that are available to you at the present time. Insisting on this high level of service by your professionals will ensure that you receive the very best personalized package of health care protection possible.

Causes of Acne

Writen by David Chandler

Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that is caused due to certain biological variations in the pilosebaseous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its connecting sebaceous gland) of the skin. The most common form of acne known as “acne vulgaris” usually appears during adolescence.

Acne is caused due to excessive oil in human body. The glands in the skin secrete excessive amount of oil that block the hair follicles by combining naturally with the dead skin cells. Generally, people who eat a lot of oily food suffer from this problem.

Due to acne some parts of the human body are affected. Some of them are face, arms etc. The oil secretions behind the blocked pores create a perfect environment for uncontrolled multiplication by the bacteria in the skin. In response, the skin inflames, producing the visible lesion (acne). Rashes are occurred on the body. The face, upper arms, back and chest are especially affected by acne.

The certain lesions of acne are: blackish elevations or pale yellow and/or small whitish bumps. More inflamed rashes take the shape of boil-like tender swellings or reddish bumps. After resolution of the blemishes, prominent unsightly acne scars may remain.

The acne condition is common in puberty as a result of an abnormal response to normal levels of the male hormone testosterone. Acne occurs when the hormones are increased due to excess oil in the body. There is however no way to predict how long acne will take to disappear completely or that it will ever recur again.

Acne affects a large percentage of humans at some stage in life. Apart from leaving behind the marks of scars it has some psychological effects as well causing stress and depression. Therefore acne should not be neglected and should be treated with great care and responsibility to ensure a healthy life.

Hair Loss Products

A Growing Problem

In the past few decades, studies have shown that hair loss has been a growing problem-literally. More and more people are finding their hair deserting them at a young age. And more and more of these people are choosing hair loss products to fight back.

Perceptions Of Hair Loss

Hair loss is not a life threatening illness, but it can have a detrimental affect on the way a person views him or herself as well as how others perceive them. The way you look is the first impression that you are ever going to make and it is important that you feel good about it.

Harmful Beauty Treatments

There are hair salons all over the country, waiting to cut, perm, color and tint our hair, but over time, this type of hair abuse takes its toll. After years of exposure the elements, along with all the “beauty” treatments, our hair is left brittle and dry. That is why it is so important that you use good hair loss products to combat any dryness that you feel.

When Hair Thins

Hair starts to thin, there is more and more hair on the pillows or in the drain of the shower and you are starting to feel the heat. Fear not, there are hair loss products on the market today that have proven their ability to stimulate new growth of hair. Hair Loss Products

When walking down the hair care isle of any pharmacy or store, you will see hundreds of shampoos, conditioners and creams that promise hair re-growth. There are so many products with so many promises, it is difficult to choose just one.

The options are vast: there are vitamin supplement treatments, herbal cures, scalp treatments and as a last resort hair transplants. Before spending your life savings on treatments for hair loss, understand what is causing it is half the battle.

Genetics And Hair Loss

Family genetics are a major factor in most hair loss cases. If the balding gene is in your family, chances are you will get it. And for some no hair loss products will help.

There are however steps that can be taken to reduce the risks of hair loss:

Always use a mild shampoo. Avoid coloring your hair, his dries hair to the point of being breaking. Avoid perming your hair, the solutions that are used in perming hair can actually burn the scalp; causing scarring that can prevent the new growth of hair. If you do color or treat your hair get some good hair loss products that will help rebuild the hair and moisten it.

Conditioners And Moisturizers Make The Best Hair Loss Products

Having the right hair loss products is key to healthy hair. Use a conditioner that moisturizes the scalp as well as the hair itself. Having a healthy scalp will help with the growth of new hair. Hair needs hydration to be healthy just as the body does.

Understanding Hair Loss

Taking the time to understand how to take care of your hair will go along way in saving it. Too often, we are in a rush to leave the house and we just run a brush through our hair. When you do this, stop for a moment and look at the brush. Do you see a lot more hair in it? Being aware can help you stop the problem before it gets too out of control.

Once you know that the problem exists you can get some good hair loss products to help you combat it.

advanced nutritional products what are they

Advanced Nutritional Products – What Are They?

Writen by David Buster

Advanced nutritional products are substances that have been shown by clinical studies to provide important health benefits. Advanced nutritional products that support the health of the heart, eyes, brain, immune system, joints and so on are being proven by studies on an ongoing basis. We are living longer, and we want those extra years to be active ones full of optimism, energy and health.

The foundation for good health is a lifestyle that includes a sensible diet with nutritional supplements, sufficient quality sleep, reasonable exercise and weight management. Taking high-quality, anti-aging advanced nutritional products helps fill in the dietary gaps that everyone will have. The essential nutrients that your body needs are extensive and complex. Vitamins and minerals are just the beginning. Other nutrients that provide significant anti-aging benefits are the key to improved energy, better health and freedom from disease.

Here are examples of advanced nutritional products:

Resveratrol – this phytonutrient is an antioxidant found in the skins of red grapes, in red wine, red grape juice and mulberries. Studies suggest that it is an effective antioxidant that reduces mortality in cardiovascular diseases and cancer, that it inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus, may be beneficial in atherosclerosis, may be helpful in lowering cholesterol levels, increasing HDL cholesterol levels, preventing damage to blood vessels and as alleviation of menopausal symptoms.

Quercetin – is a bioflavanoid and one of the advanced nutritional products that supports the immune system, connective tissue and blood vessels.

Alpha Lipoic Acid – this antioxidant (ALA) enhances effects of other antioxidants to fight free radicals in the body and enhance recovery. May enhance insulin sensitivity, improving the body’s ability to add lean mass and reduce fat. May be beneficial in persons suffering from type II diabetes and hyperglycemia.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine – occurs naturally in the body and is one of the advanced nutritional products. It is used for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, age-related memory deficits, senile depression, Down syndrome, alcoholism-related cognitive deficits and after-stroke treatment as it increases cerebral blood flow.

L-Carnosine – may play a role in preventing atherosclerosis, joint inflammation, formation of cataracts, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.

Policosanol – comes from sugar cane and has been studied and published in over 80 clinical studies, more studies than for most prescription drugs. Policosanol significantly lowers total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol without the side affects associated with the statin drugs.

Lutein – is found in leafy dark green vegetables. Studies suggest it may offer protection against cancer and degeneration of the eyes and skin by sunlight.

Zeaxanthin – increasing dietary intake of the advanced nutritional products lutein and zeaxanthin may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

DIM 3,3′ – diindolylmethane is found in the cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli. Diindolylmethane may be used for preventing breast and uterine cancer, preventing benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and for premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Turmeric – is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant herb used for bronchitis, colds, chest infections, leprosy, fever, kidney inflammation and cystitis.

And there are more! Is it possible that advanced nutritional products can slow the aging process? Absolutely! Numerous clinical studies have shown and are still discovering the health benefits of many of these nutrients. Slowing the aging process includes providing your body ALL the nutrients it requires. You can try to design your own supplement plan and take many different supplements individually. However, designing your own supplement program is not the best way since this means taking many different substances and will not provide the best results.

When trying to design your own supplement plan, it’s easy to end up with a dozen or more individual substances to take daily, which is both a hassle and expensive. Besides, if certain substances are out of balance, it’s possible they can combine to produce other unwanted compounds that can be harmful. There is one manufacturer that combines the advanced nutritional products in one broad high-quality supplement. Nutrient quantities are combined according to the latest research and the individual ingredients are even linked to the relevant clinical studies.

Learn as much as you can about what finding the best advanced nutritional products really means. Your health, energy and wellness is the issue. Before spending your money, be informed about the anti-aging products you’ll be taking every day.

how do you look

How Do You Look?

Writen by Alayna A. Fries

Do you ever think that maybe the synthetic ingredients in your skin care products may be causing your symptoms and your skin to look the way it does?

If your skin could talk, what would it be saying to you?

If your skin could talk, it might say “So here we are, I want you to imagine this scenario, hypothetically speaking, you walk into your favorite skin care supplier and you see this on nearly every label of the products you were planning on buying:

Warning: The FDA has determined that this product contains dangerous cancer causing skin irritants laced with harmful toxic carcinogens. You may be allergic to this product which contains ingredients which could actually damage your skin and harm you. I am using strong language here because I need your attention, I am your skin remember?” This labeling would be absolutely true of nearly 7 out of 10 of the products you buy.

Do you recall ever seeing this kind of warning? Well, of course you haven’t.

The bottom line is this. If you are allergic to a certain ingredient and it is not listed on the label you put it on your skin and find you are allergic. Another scenario is if you put a certain ingredient on yourself and it does the opposite of what it is suppose to do and causes more symptoms. Something you should be aware of is that they will end up in your body and you could be seriously injured. In my opinion, we should be avoiding these skin care products all together and don’t apply anything to the skin. It is your choice to apply these products to your skin or not. I want you to know that if you are going to be doing this and for the rest of your life, that you consider what is safe for your skin and your health. Be very careful.

Learn about the ingredients that may be in your very own skin care products. They may be affecting the way your skin looks and you don’t even know it. Become educated.

Alayna A. Fries, Licensed Esthetician Author, If Your Skin Could Talk, What Would It Say?

Her book teaches you what ingredients to avoid, what ingredients in skin care products are causing the common skin symptoms we all experience from time to time and what ingredients to look for when purchasing products for your skin. And by this, she means safe skin care products.

Her studies have also shown that the environment, diet, stress and the ingredients in the products all affect the appearance of the skin. Her goal is to let you know about some of the things that you can be doing differently to improve the way you look and ultimately the way you feel. She believes that if you improve the condition of your skin you will feel better. In this book, she teaches you ways that have worked for her.

She has learned that the products that are available to you today are not all the manufacturers say they are. She has also learned that the chemical ingredients in these products can cause a wide range of problems that she is fairly certain you did not bargain for.

eight glasses of water a day a common misunderstanding

Eight Glasses of Water a Day: A Common Misunderstanding

Writen by Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Drinking eight glasses of water a day just means you will spend a lot of time running to the bathroom.

Why do so many people believe this rule? The number originally came from the National Academy of Sciences of the United States Food and Nutrition Board, which publishes recommended daily allowances of nutrients. The 1945 edition of the Food and Nutrition Board recommended: “A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 liters (about 8 cups) daily in most instances.” This amount is based on the calculation of one milliliter of water for each calorie of food. However, the Board also noted that most of the water you need is in the food you eat.

All foods contain water. Even the driest nut or seed has a lot of water in it. Furthermore, when food is digested, it is converted to energy, carbon dioxide and water. You can get most of the fluid your body needs from your food, and you only need to drink enough water to prevent constipation.

When you eat, the pyloric valve at the end of your stomach closes to keep food in the stomach. Then the stomach takes fluid that you drink and food that you eat and mixes them into a soup. Then the soup passes to the intestines and remains a soup until it reaches your colon. Only then is the fluid absorbed to turn the soup into solid waste in the colon. If you do not have enough fluid in your body, your body extracts extra fluid from your stool, which makes it hard and can cause constipation. You do not need additional water to “cleanse” or “remove toxins;” healthy kidneys provide that function without any extra help from you.

A reasonable amount for a healthy human is one cup of water or any other fluid with each meal. If you have a problem with constipation you may not be drinking enough water, but if you are not constipated, you are getting plenty. You’ll also want to replace fluids whenever you sweat a lot, particularly when you exercise in hot weather. Drink water whenever you feel thirsty, but there’s no benefit from forcing yourself to drink eight glasses of water a day.

Cosmetic Chin Surgery – The Final Facial Touch

Writen by Jeff Lakie

When either cosmetic or plastic surgery are mentioned to us, our thoughts run immediately to breast implants or liposuction, but there are many other procedures available that although they might not receive the same attention of their more obvious counterparts can have a huge impact upon both the appearance and the self confidence of a patient. One of these unsung heroes is cosmetic chin surgery, which can exert a profound effect that belies the ease with which it can be performed.

Cosmetic chin surgery is a relatively simple procedure that is usually performed in about an hour or so. Scarring is minimal, and though the patient might be limited to a liquid diet for the two or three days following surgery, recovery time is typically fast, and patients are back to their usual routines within a couple of days. Side effects, including the risk of infection or numbness in the area, are rare, making the benefits of cosmetic chin surgery far outweigh the risks.

And the benefits are striking. Those of us with ample chins have probably never noticed how they suitably frame our facial features, creating a sense of balance in our face. A smaller or receding chin can set this balance awry, placing a disproportionate emphasis on other features, such as the nose, particularly if this is already large – in fact, chin and nose surgeries are commonly performed in a complimentary fashion, in order to balance the patient’s features, and release their true beauty.

Cosmetic chin surgery involves the simple insertion of an implant through an incision made either underneath the chin or in the mouth. The implant will be custom designed for each patient, insuring that the client achieves precisely the look that they and their surgeon have agreed will be most flattering to their features. The surgery can be performed under either local or general anaesthetic, and is usually done on an out patient basis – meaning that before the day is out, you will be at home again, waiting until your bandaging can be removed so that you can see the new you, in all your glory.

Jeff Lakie is the founder of Plastic Surgery Resources a website providing information on cosmetic surgery.

Heart Friendly Foods

Writen by P. Mehta

Heart disease results when plaque builds up inside the arterial walls, which causes a partial or complete obstruction of blood flow. This reduces flow of blood to heart and may result in angina. Angina is a sensation of discomfort, pain, burning or pressure, generally felt in the chest area.

Angina may be the first indication of heart disease. But many people with heart disease often get no warning signals, until they suffer a full heart attack. Chest pain should not been ignored, even when it is not permanent.

During a heart attack, the supply of oxygen to heart is cut off, resulting in tissue death for a part of the heart muscle.

There are certain foods that lower cholesterol and thus the risk of heart disease. The following heart friendly foods are important for the health of your heart.

  1. Apples: Drinking 12 ounces of apple juice or eating two whole apples a day is beneficial. Research has shown that phytochemicals in apples could help cut the risk of death from heart disease or stroke in half.

  2. Onions: Eating half a raw onion a day raises HDL (good) cholesterol by an average of 25 percent in most people.

  3. Legumes/Beans: One serving of dried beans/legumes a day can reduce cholesterol by up to 10%. The fiber and other compounds present in legumes and beans can lower cholesterol, blood clotting and improve blood-vessel function. These are also a great source of folate, which keeps homocysteine levels (an indicator of heart trouble), in check.

  4. Oats: Eating about one-cup of cooked oatmeal a day significantly decreases blood cholesterol levels. Oats contain beta-glucans, a soluble fibe that is responsible for cholesterol reduction.

  5. Walnuts: Eating walnuts can reduce your total cholesterol level by 12% and LDL cholesterol level by 16%. Walnuts contain a type of fat called linolenic acid, which lowers cholesterol and prevents blood clots.

  6. Olive Oil, Canola Oil: Of all cooking oils, olive oil contains the largest proportion (77%) of monounsaturated fat and has powerful antioxidants, which lowers LDL cholesterol without affecting HDL levels.

introduction to fasting

Introduction to Fasting

Writen by Dean Novosat

Fasting, in its simplest definition, is giving up anything for a specific period of time. Typically, we think of fasting as is in giving up food or water as in a fasting diet. In this regard, there are basically three types of fasts: a total fast in which you give up all food and water, a water fast, in which you give up all food and drink only water, and a juice fast, in which you give up solid foods but drink only fresh juices.

There are different reasons for fasting as well. The three main reasons for fasting are:

1. Weight loss. This type of fasts has the end goal of losing weight. If you take in less calories than you burn, the end result should be weight loss. So if you give up solid foods for let’s say a week or so, and drink only juice and water, you should be able to lose a fair amount of weight. This is the theory behind weight-loss fasting. Obviously, weight-loss fasting should not be attempted, or started, without first consulting a medical professional.

2. Religion. Most religious texts including the Bible, refer to fasting and prayer. Fasting, is a way to show obedience and faithfulness to God. When we fast, we are sacrificing our carnal instinct to heat and drink. This is pleasing to God. Also, when we fast, it alters our mind. This is said by some to cause a deeper relationship with God. In the Old Testament, many times God’s chosen people were called to fasting and prayer. There are many examples where God answered the prayers of his people when they fasted and pray to him.

3. Health. They held fast typically involves either a water fast or a juice fast. With this type of fast, solid foods are given out for a set period of time sometimes as long as several weeks. The only substance allowed to enter the body would be pure water or fresh fruit and vegetable juices. This has the healthful benefit of cleansing the body and eliminating toxins that have built up in the intestinal tract. When water fasting, typically distilled water is used. Never use faucet or tap water when water fasting. Tap water contains harmful chemicals that can cause more damage when you are fasting. This is because the only liquid entering the body is water it is assimilated very quickly. This causes the harmful chemicals to be rapidly absorbed as well. Distilled water contains no harmful chemicals or bacteria and in fact, can pull harmful toxins out of the body.

Whatever the reason, fasting can be a healthy choice for your body, soul, and mind. Whether your goal is weight-loss, health, or a deeper relationship with God, a fast can be a beneficial activity to try. The most important thing about fasting, is to not give up. The first couple of hours of fast are the most difficult ones. Even two to three hours without food can seem like an eternity we are used to eating at any time. We live in a society where food is easily and readily available. When we deprive our bodies of this food, it can cause severe mental distress. However, the body will adjust to your fast. Just give it time and remember that your mind is what is craving the food. Your body can survive several days without food. Once you get past this initial thought, your fast can be an enjoyable and healthful benefit.
