How To Naturally Heal With Alexander’s Technique

Writen by Eric Cho

“The Alexander Technique is an intelligent way to solve body problems”. Developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander, this hands-on healing method seeks to encourage all body processes to work more efficiently thus reducing stress and physical discomfort.

This may sound ironic, but the Alexander Technique is really not so much about learning as it is about ‘un-learning’. Life as we know it now is mechanical and stressful.

This means that right from our childhood we start accumulating unwanted muscular tension throughout the body. If unreleased, this tension leads to ailments such as back and neck pain, arthritis, sciatica, migraine, hypertension, insomnia and even depression. Obviously, harmful habits are bound to take their toll.

Even though medical science has been progressing faster than a forest fire on a hot afternoon, diseases and ailments have managed to win the race. The reason is quite simple. As stress and tension have increased, humans have adapted by using certain body techniques. We no longer sit, we slump. We no longer stand straight, we slouch or lean. These miniscule changes affect our entire system and trigger diseases. Modern medicine combats the problem by prescribing powerful painkillers that effectively silence the body’s natural warning system. This is no cure; it is just a case of ‘burying one’s head in the sand’.

Most of us are not even aware of the tension piling up within us. The Alexander Technique makes us aware of the balance, co-ordination and posture of the body while performing actions. This consciousness helps us to relieve discomfort and pain, or even avoid them altogether. The technique teaches us new ways of sitting, walking, standing and lying down that puts less strain on our muscles, bones and joints. Thus our body works more efficiently while keeping wear and tear to the barest minimum.

Since our mental state often reflects our physical state, people who practice this technique often describe the effect as ‘walking on air’ – so light and effervescent is the feeling that follows the release of tension. This means there is less mental strain and trauma. As a direct result, your general ability to cope with life increases.

The Alexander Technique takes the student through basic movements that allow you to regain your natural sense of coordination. There are no exercises or psychotherapy in this technique. There are no manual healing techniques either. A skilled teacher guides the student through various movements, observing and working with coordination. The student participates intelligently and slowly there is a gradual change in habits.

The biggest benefit is of course, comfort and ease. Optimum functioning and minimal strain is what the Alexander Technique aims at. Improved posture and alignment, freer and more comfortable movement, increased strength and vitality and healthier breathing are the other benefits.

Patients dealing with chronic pain resulting from injury or excessive stress use this technique to relieve pain. Performing artists use it to enhance their performing techniques, while children use it to increase their learning ability.

Even a perfectly healthy body can benefit by learning this technique. Habitual actions that undermine the natural rhythm of the body slowly destabilize us. Unless we consciously change the habits that we have taught ourselves, there is pain and discomfort at the far end of the tunnel. Through this technique you become aware of the underlying cause and learn to eliminate the tension that causes these ailments. Many of us put pains and aches down to age; Matthias Alexander pointed out that it’s all in the habit.

Horehound

Writen by Bruce Burnett

The name horehound is derived from “Horus”, the Egyptian god of sky and light. Ancient herbalists prescribed it for fevers and malaria and as an antidote for snakebites, rabid dog bites and ingested poison. Horehound was traditionally carried in sachets as a protection against sorcery. When mixed with ash leaves and placed in a bowl of water, horehound is supposed to release healing vibrations and should be placed in a room with a sick person. When drunk as a tea, the herb will promote mental acumen and clarity.

A native of Europe, but now naturalized throughout North and South America, horehound is a hardy perennial of the mint family – with its telltale square stem — and, like most mints, can become invasive if not controlled. The herb can be started from seed or cuttings in the early spring. The seed should be sown just below the surface and cuttings should have about a one-foot spacing. Rings of small white flowers will appear from June to September in the second year of growth, but the leaves may be cut for use or drying in the first year.

Horehound won’t win any beauty prizes in your garden, but ironically, when dried, the leaves and flowers make an attractive addition to arrangements of everlastings. The herb will flourish under the most marginal of circumstances, in poor dry soil for example along the edge of driveways and other neglected areas. The only threat to horehound is to sit in very wet conditions over winter. A couple of more ornamental species of the herb are silver horehound, with its woollier leaves and whiter flowers and the denser Spanish horehound, with pink flowers. Unfortunately, both of these are only hardy to Zone 7. The Mediterranean plant, black horehound (Ballota nigra), although also a member of the mint family, is a different species with a very unpleasant odor.

Other than as a tea, horehound has no culinary application, although the herb was once used to flavor ale in England. Horehound is the champion herb for chest problems and has enjoyed this role for thousands of years. The Greek physician Dioscorides (AD 40-90) advocated a decoction of horehound for tuberculosis, asthma and coughs. The herb is an effective immune booster and is quite nutritious, containing vitamins A, B, C and E, essential fatty acids, iron, potassium and marrubin (an expectorant). Horehound has proven to be effective in loosening phlegm and mucus in the bronchial tubes and in the lungs. It will also relieve coughs and sore throats. The German government’s committee of herbal experts known as Commission E, has sanctioned horehound for use against bronchial problems, including laryngitis.

Acne Scars – Is There Hope?

Writen by Sarah Cannon

It is estimated that eighty percent of people between the ages of fourteen and twenty suffer from acne. For most of us, acne is a short-lived annoyance during certain periods of our lives. Unfortunately, for some people acne is painful long after the pimples have been treated. Scarring from acne is most common for those who have suffered from severe acne, but scarring can affect anyone who has experienced acne.

If you are one of the millions of people living with acne scars, there’s good news. There are many options available to diminish these unseemly blemishes. All of these techniques work to restore the normal, healthy appearance of scarred skin; it may not always be possible to get rid of all acne scars, but with the right treatment for you, no one will ever know you were scarred. Acne scar treatments vary in their approaches depending on the severity of your scarring and your budget. You should discuss all of the available options, costs, and side effects with your dermatologist.

Before we talk about the treatments available, we should take a look at why acne can cause scarring. The primary reason for any kind of scar is tissue damage. When body tissue is damaged, our body tries to heal and protect it from infection. In the case of acne, dead skin cells block the body’s pores, preventing the secretion of natural oils in the skin. This creates a perfect environment for bacteria to grow, which irritates the skin and causes acne. When acne is aggravated due to harsh scrubbing or other forms of physical attention, it further aggravates the condition and harms the sensitive skin tissue. When the skin finally is able to heal, a scar is left behind.

One of the most popular acne scar treatment techniques is injecting collagen under the surface of the scarred skin. Collagen puffs out the skin and evens out the scarred area, making acne less noticeable. Another important acne scar treatment technique is what is called autologous fat transfer. This process makes use of your own body’s fat. Fat is taken from another part of your body and is injected into the affected part, filling up the scar. This technique requires repeated applications because the fat is eventually absorbed into the body, making the scar noticeable once again. Your dermatologist may suggest you try laser treatments or dermabrasion. Both of these techniques are very effective. In the most extreme cases, skin grafting and skin surgery may be considered.

Keep in mind that these are only a small number of the options available for acne scar treatment.

Health Tips : Do’s & Don’ts To Remain Healthy

Writen by Rajinder Goswami

Every one of us wants to remain fit and fine.

Here are some basic tips to remain healthy:

Exercise Regularly

1. Walking on the green grass in the early morning improves your eye sight.

2. Have a brisk wall for at least 5 days a week for minimum 35 minutes a day. Remember your calories start burning after 20 minutes of brisk walk. It means waking lesser than 20 minutes will not give your desired results. Alternatively, you should walk Ten Thousand step daily (it will be approximately equivalent to 6 kilometers).

3. Keep your self physically active e.g. avoid lifts and use stairs as far as possible.

4. Avoid using 2 wheelers/4 wheelers when you are to go out for shorter distances say 1-2 kilometers. Either go on foot or use bicycle.

5. Your exercise must include one for the lungs.

6. Keep your weight under control and remove fat around your waist.

7. Exercise your brain – solve puzzles, Su Doku etc.

Eat Healthy

1. Drink a lot of water.

2. Avoid spicy, fatty and junk foods.

3. If possible, change over from 3 meal system to taking smaller quantity of food 5-6 times.

4. Cold drinks/Tinned beverages are not good for health. In summer try lemon water. It is cool and healthy and energizer.

5. Eat more green salad, sprouted beans and fruits.

6. Use milk, cheese, cream, curd having minimum fat content.

7. Always eat less than your actual hunger. Don’t fill to your full stomach.

8. Don’t take liquor too much. It affects you liver and kidneys.

Entertain Yourself

1. Listen music, play with the children, give time to your pets. At least give 45 minutes to good reading/listening music and other activities of your choice.

2. SMILE – IT INCREASES YOUR FACE VALUE. Not only that – laughing also reduces your tension and increases your efficiency. So laugh a lot – switch on the TV channels which are full of laughter and the serials which are based on lighter and funnier side of the life.

3. During weekly offs, go to a place of your choice.

Change Your Behavior

1. If God is listening to your prayers, He is enhancing your faith, If He is delaying, He is enhancing your patience and if He is not listening at all, He has certainly thought something better for you.

2. Avoid anger, it eats up your energy and adds to your tension. In case you feel yourself angry, behave like a tea-kettle. Don’t you know that tea-kettle whistles when it is boiling?

3. To avoid tension, keep your thinking positive. Remember, you can’t change the whole world with you. Environment will not adjust with you, you will have to adjust with the environment.

4. If things are not moving the way you want, say to yourself: “If it is so, it can’t be otherwise”.

So health is combination of activity, healthy eating, leisure and internal attitude plus spirituality.

Writen by Jed Baguio

Moving forward with life as a handicap is the best thing you can do. You know as they say “This too shall pass” sooner or later you’ll get over it and enjoy the life as it was meant to be.

Enjoying life as handicap may be a little daunting since the loss of motor skill can cause a lot of barriers. Fortunately electric wheelchairs are here to save the day. This makes transportation easy and you can roam around as you like and visit your favorite place in town.

Electric wheelchairs are also know as “Power Chairs”. As it comes with its name, electric wheelchairs makes use of electricity coming from batteries which then turns the motors for mobility. Power chairs can be classified as indoors, outdoors and some are both.

Electric wheelchairs are controlled by a joystick. Which also controls the speed and direction. This giving handicap the ease of mobility and no need to exert too much effort just to get around.

In the market today there are three major types of electric wheelchairs according to the wheel it is driven. There are rear wheel drives, also mid and front wheel drives. As same as automobiles each has different feel from each other.

Some tips for choosing electric wheelchairs:

1. Make sure that the wheelchair is appropriate for your age. Kid wheelchairs are for kids and adult wheelchairs are for adults. It is also convenient if you can find one that’s easily folded so it’s a lot more manageable.

2. Take time to learn and discover what brands and types of electric wheelchair that has a proven good track record. Visit some websites, ask a friend or opinions from relatives. This will greatly reduce regrets for buying a lemon electric wheelchair.

Cardio Workout Plan – My Favorite Fat Burning Workout

Writen by Phyllis Ward

One of the top questions I receive is “What should I do for my cardio workout plan?” I usually answer with a question; “What do you enjoy doing for your cardio workout?”

It doesn’t matter so much what you do for cardio. It’s doing what you enjoy. If I suggest you run 3-10 minute miles for your cardio workout plan and you have never ran in your life or you hate running, how successful of a plan would that be?

Let’s cover a few of the basics:

Low intensity-is working at around the 60% range of your target heart rate. 220 – 40 = 180 (maximum heart rate). 180 x 60% =108 beats per minute.
Low intensity is easy to do so you can workout longer and a great idea for someone beginning a cardio workout plan.
Low intensity is low risk. Most anyone can start a low intensity workout plan
Low intensity is burns a higher percentage of calories from fat.

You just stopped at fat burning and have decided on low intensity didn’t you? Let’s take a look at high intensity cardio.

High intensity would be working at around 75-85% of your maximum heart rate. Using the same calculations above a 40 year old would have a range of 135-153 beats per minute
High intensity cardio continues to burn calories at a higher rate long after you have completed your workout.
You will burn more calories faster. You can walk 1 mile in 20 minutes and burn 100 calories or you can run a mile in 10 minutes and burn 100 calories.
High intensity can increase muscle mass. Look at the difference in sprinters and marathon runners.

Here’s the question to ask yourself; What if I do both? Hmmmcould that possibly work? Sure, it’s called interval training. You work at a moderate pace for 3-5 minutes, depending on your level of fitness, and then work at a high intensity for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Work at a 5/1 minute ratio. If you are starting at an intermediate level you could work at a 3/1 minute ratio.

There are several ways you can set up your interval cardio workout plan. I will use a treadmill workout for an example since a treadmill has a timer and is very versatile. Always take about 5 minutes to warm up first.

Walking/Beginner-After your warm up walk briskly for 3-5 minutes and then jog lightly for 1 minute. As your fitness level increases you can shorten the walk to 3 minutes. Repeat your intervals until you have reached your goal mileage or time.

Running/Intermediate-After your warm up run at a moderate pace for 3-5 minutes and then run full out for 1 minute. As your fitness level improves you will decrease your moderate time and even pick up the pace a little. Remember, the goal is your target heart rate.

You can use the same cardio workout plan with the elevation on your treadmill. On your one minute intervals or high intensity interval, increase the elevation as high as is safely possible for you.

I’ve used a treadmill for my example but you can use the same idea with running outside, an elliptical trainer, spin bike, bicycle, aerobic dancing; anything you like.

So my answer to, “what is the best cardio workout plan?” Do what you enjoy first of all and integrate interval training for a maximum fat burning cardio workout plan.

5 Steps to Get Rid of Dandruff

Writen by Daniel Loh

What is dandruff anyway?

Dandruff is actually a condition whereby the scalp surface has a rapid increase in cells. These cells quickly replace older cells, so the oldest topmost layer of cells becomes dead and is shed off as flakes of skin.

Dandruff is seasonal: the worst season is in winter and the least severe season is in summer.

There are a few common symptoms of dandruff, mainly that of scaling (shedding of small white flakes of skin) and occasionally itching.

But more importantly, how can you cure dandruff?

Because it is a natural body process, dandruff cannot be cured, but it can be controlled.

Here are 5 important things you should do to control your dandruff problem.

1. Use a medicated shampoo. The medicated shampoo will reduce the speed of the growth of the cells on the scalp, thus lessening the cell replacement and decreasing the amount of dandruff. The shampoo should also have an antiseptic that will help prevent infection of your scalp so as to reduce itchiness.

2. Shampoo more often, up to three times a week using medicated shampoo until the situation is controlled. Then, continue use of the medicated shampoo once every week.

3. Stop using gels, hairsprays and hair-coloring products. If you must use them, do not use them excessively and learn the proper use of such products.

4. Don’t scratch the scalp when it is itchy. This will cause the problem to worsen.

5. If the problem is severe, see your doctor for anti-inflammatory cream for your scalp or anti-dandruff tablets to ingest.

Finding Quality Essential Oils

Writen by Lisa Barger

In his book, “The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy” Salvatore Battaglia estimates that only 5% of all essential oils are produced specifically for the aromatherapy market. And the folks at Amrita tell us that the vast majority of essential oils are grown and produced for the food, perfume or pharmaceutical industries. Unfortunately, these industries focus more on a stable, predictable yield than the botanical purity of their oils. So how do you know you’re getting a quality product? Here are some things to look for:

  • Botanical Purity–If you’re new to aromatherapy, it’s important to realize that the words “aromatherapy” and “essential oil” don’t guarantee that you’re getting a botanical product. Potpourri oils, for example, are usually synthetic fragrance products not intended for use on the body. Authentic essential oil will be labeled with botanical information stating both the common plant name and the official botanical nomenclature.

  • Specialization–Whether you buy at your local health food store or directly from an essential oil producer you should look for oils marketed specifically for use in aromatherapy. Though they’re almost certainly going to be more expensive, these oils are produced with their therapeutic qualities in mind.

  • Opaque Containers–Opaque containers protect your oils from damaging UV rays. Most essential oils are sold in amber or dark blue glass bottles but aluminum bottles are growing in popularity. Bottles should have tight-fitting hard plastic lidsessential oils should never be sold with permeable rubber bulb-droppers already attached.

  • GC Testing–If you’re purchasing in bulk, especially if you’re purchasing directly from a grower, your supplier should make GC (gas chromatography) test results available. CG is a standard test–if a supplier balks at sending you this information or acts offended by your request, look for another supplier.

  • Full-Disclosure Labels–To assure that you’re buying from a supplier who knows what he’s doing, I recommend only purchasing oils labeled with the following:

    • Common Name (for example, Peppermint)
    • Botanical Name (for example, Mentha piperita)
    • Plant Part Used (for example, Leaves)
    • Country of Origin (for example, USA)
    • Extraction Method (for example, Distilled)
    • Lot Number (or production date)

Unfortunately, adulteration, dilution and outright fraud are far more common that many people realize. Buying from a reputable company (and as far up the supply chain as possible) is one of the best ways to protect your investment.
