Fat Is A Self-Inflicted Disease

Writen by Virginia Bola, PsyD

I just came back from three days in Las Vegas. What an eye-opener!

The biggest, most lavish buffets in the world attract the biggest, most expansive people. “All you can eat” takes on a whole new meaning when you realize just how much some people can consume at a single sitting. Most remarkable was the sight of a dutiful wife bringing a piled up platter to the table for a husband who was obviously way too fat to stand in line on his own.

That picture was rather unusual in that the wife was about normal weight. It seems that in most cases, the woman is the humungous one, waddling through the casino in her big-as-a-tent shorts, followed by a skinny, wiry guy who looks, at best, disinterested in life.

Of course, it is harder for women to lose weight, courtesy of nature’s trick of a small frame coupled with sinister hormonal influences. But in our society, where pretty girls and sex sell everything, women tend to be so much more weight conscious.

So what happens? Did they never approach the social ideal or did they battle for years and then one day just give up?

If you control your weight for an external reason -catching a mate, making friends, becoming popular – once these goals are accomplished, the effort no longer seems worthwhile. If you fight to stay slim for intrinsic reasons – you like to look slim, you like fitted clothes, you respect yourself when you know you look good – then you are more likely to keep plugging away at it.

What is so pathetic about the obese is not just how awful they look, it’s the deadness in their eyes: no pride, no self-respect, no self-affection. What a depressing way to exist, made only more tragic because it is self-inflicted.

Chronic Constipation: This Thing is Not a Joke; Get Rid of It ASAP (part 1)

Writen by Foras Aje

According to the research of pioneers in Naturopathy, it will be safe to say: Every disease is simply a product of chronic constipation which is a clogging up of the entire pipe system of the human body.

The average person is constantly carrying 10-15 pounds of un-eliminated feces in their bowels. This in itself has a toxic effect on the blood stream. Experts in autopsy have stated that in 60-70% of the colons examined, foreign matter such as worms and decades old feces-stones have been found still present within.

Prof Arnold Ehret, author of the Mucus-Less Diet Healing System, stated that in his fasting retreat, he had fat patients who eliminated up to 50-60 lbs of waste alone from their bodies! Chronic constipation (as in the colon) in itself might be the cause of a plethora of diseases. Taking these into consideration, it definitely will be an understatement to say that all measure must be taken to alleviate constipation in our bodies.

Chronic Constipation: Its Causes and Effects

Chronic Constipation may be caused by:

1. Failure to pay attention to the desire for bowel movement.

2. Lack of sufficient fruits and vegetables in the diet.

3. Lack of fluids by not drinking enough water. (Not just liquids as in sodas and alcohol!)

4. Poor food combinations and consumption of mucus forming and hard to digest foods.

As was mentioned earlier, the more the feces remains in the colon, the more it poisons the body as the blood stream must come in continuous contact with the colon. Furthermore, as the colon remains unclean, the foods in the stomach remain undigested or hard to assimilate, which explains why some people who apparently might be skinny, still can consume loads of food.

All of these considered, it is plain to see why fruits, some roots and mostly raw green leaf vegetables which serve as nutrient giving items and intestinal brooms, form the basis of a healthy diet. It is important to know that healing properties, not the calories as most diet fads state is the main factor for choosing a diet and avoiding chronic constipation.

The stomach is the central organ of disease matter supply. There is a limit to its ability to digest and to empty itself after the meal especially with a clogged up colon. This explains why a foul breath is perceived in the mornings and why most people look drawn and constantly tired.

The constitutional obstructions in your entire system are the sources of all diseases be it excess weight, acne, asthma you name it! All of them have their source in the colon. Without proper diet and exercise, the Standard American Diet is never eliminated and the entire system is slowly constipated, especially in the place of the symptom of the disease.

I will continue with the solutions of chronic constipation in part 2 of this article on “Chronic Constipation: This thing is not a joke, Get rid of it ASAP”

Keep in mind, as with any human ailment, chronic constipation can be cured and prevented permanently, you perhaps only need to be shown how for your success.

Inflammation: The New Medical "Bad Guy"

Writen by Bruce Bailey

According to the latest medical theory, chronic inflammation is the root cause of almost every disease suffered by human beings.

That’s right. Many doctors believe persistent, low-level inflammation paves the way for chronic disease, including those we usually experience late in life, e.g. arthritis, heart and kidney disease, and cancer.

As a part of our immune response system, inflammation occurs when the body is fighting germs that enter the body through a variety of ways, e.g. injury or inhalation. When you experience redness, swelling, heat, infection, and pain from a variety of ailments, it’s a sign of inflammation. Normally, the inflammation goes away when the body has conquered the infection or injury, but if the body fails to shut off the inflammation process, a more serious condition can occur.

It is generally recognized that heart attacks occur when the blood vessels become clogged with “plaque” (what we usually refer to as the bad LDL cholesterol) that is deposited on the vessel walls. This bad cholesterol also gets embedded inside arteries and our immune system “attacks” it. Persistent inflammation in the arteries can eventually cause plaque to burst. Now many doctors use a simple blood test for inflammation called CRP (short for C-reactive Protein) to help assess a person’s cardiac risk. CRP is an index of inflammation in the arteries and the CRP increases as inflammation increases. For example, test have shown that middle aged men with high CRP levels in their blood were three times more likely to suffer a heart attack in the next 6 years than men with normal levels. Medical experts say that a CRP of 3.0 mg/L or higher triples your heart attack risk. People with CRP less than 0.5 mg/L rarely have heart attacks.

The good news is that we can do something to reduce the risks of persistent inflammation, including losing weight, exercising regularly, and eating the right foods. According to the Center for Human Nutrition at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, some foods can cause inflammation while others can decrease it. Diets that are rich in fruits and vegetables, and foods that offer lots of Omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, and walnuts) are best. Further, a diet of such foods has been shown to be instrumental in weight reduction, and lowering CRP and insulin resistance.

You can also take prescription or over-the-counter NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra), which reduce inflammation but can have dangerous side effects. While these drugs are effective COX-2 inhibitors, the life-threatening side effects from prolonged uninterrupted use (such as gastro-intestinal hemorrhage and kidney and liver failure) make them both dangerous and controversial. One has only to read the literature produced by the companies manufacturing these drugs to know how dangerous they are. In fact, in the United States in the year 2000, more people died from the complications of NSAIDs than died from AIDS! Further, Vioxx was recently withdrawn from the marketplace because it caused heart attacks.

Inflammation is “one of the bad guys.” You need to get it under control, but don’t jump from the “frying pan into the fire” by treating your condition with a “badder guy.” Eat right, exercise regularly, have your blood work done once a year, and listen to your doctor’s advice. May I also suggest you find a natural food supplement to treat your inflammation, rather than just reaching for the pill bottle?

Gastric Bypass Tool: Patient Growth Stages

Writen by Kaye Bailey

Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is referred to in bariatric medicine as a “tool”, only a tool to help morbidly obese regain health through massive weight loss. What is seldom mentioned is that “Tool” causes patients to experience four phases of growth: Conception, Infancy, Adolescence and Maturity. Along the road through those four phases are lots of bumps and bruises, but also many celebrations and successes.

Conception begins when patients consider surgery as a treatment for morbid obesity. They may need to lose weight for health reasons, to restore quality of life or improve diminished self-esteem.

Conception is followed by birth, an event conducted by the surgeon who partitions off most of the stomach creating a pocket or pouch that will hold one ounce of food. In most gastric bypass procedures the digestive system is re-routed to bypass the intestine and shortcut to the bowel. This prevents too many calories from being absorbed and stored by the body in the form of fat. The patient wakes from the surgery a bariatric infant.

Infancy begins when the patient wakes from the anesthesia with a stomach the size of a tablespoon. Everything is completely foreign to the behaviors and habits that caused obesity. There is not one single thing an obese person has done in the past that they can continue doing. Infancy is the time of rapid weight loss. For the first time most morbidly obese patients are consistently losing lots of weight, something they have never experienced before. Infancy for most bariatric patients lasts from nine to 18 months.

Adolescence is the stage when patients tend to fight the tool. Many patients don’t dump, vomit, snack or eat the forbidden foods until they reach adolescence. But once they approach or reach target weight they take chances and break the rules. Perhaps they eat sugar which results in a blood sugar imbalance called “dumping” or they may stuff themselves with starchy carbs causing vomiting. In the worst case, a patient returns to snacking, a little treat of hard candy here and a handful of popcorn there. This is when patients report weight regain, panic and self-loathing.

The good news: the duration of adolescence is up to the patient. A patient only hurts themselves when they break the rules. Successful WLS patients commit to themselves early to be in control of their own gastric bypass growth cycle.

Maturity At maturity a patient understands the gastric bypass system and is living the life they dreamed. They have achieved desired weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight and have stopped fighting the gastric bypass. I believe WLS maturity is reached when patients understand one word: respect. Respect for the tiny tummy, respect for the science of the body, and respect for oneself. Sure, we all experience an occasional lapse of judgment; that old lover of ours – food – is flaunting temptations every single day. But the gastric bypass patient is a brave and resilient person.

Successful patients build on infant and teenage experiences and become an adult embracing all the good things gastric bypass has facilitated. The battle against obesity isn’t easy and it never ends. Patients will fight old habits for the rest of their life. Gastric bypass is a tool, a weapon in the battle against obesity, but it is the patient who wins the war.

Best Diet Type — Losing Weight for Your Wedding

Writen by Michael Smith, MD

Choosing the right diet type is the most important decision you’ll make, as you plan for weight loss success.

The best plan to follow is designed to produce 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week. At this rate, weight loss is safe, healthy, and lasting. Plan accordingly and designate the proper number of weeks for dieting following the 1-2 pounds per week rule.

For instance, if you want to lose 10 pounds before the big day, you’ll need at least 5 weeks of dieting to guarantee healthy weight loss (10 pound goal/2 pounds per week = 5 weeks of dieting).

Diet Types for Your Wedding

Forget about all the different diets available and stick with the only type proven to produce safe, healthy, and lasting weight loss. A gradual, moderate restriction of calories is the best diet type to follow and the only one proven to work.

Interestingly, all diet types work by restricting calories. For example, the Negative Calorie Diet works because the recommended food to eat is significantly lower in calories than your baseline diet.

It’s that simple. Supporters of the diet claim that negative calorie foods burn more calories during digestion and this leads to weight loss. In truth, negative calorie foods are essentially low in calories and you end up eating fewer calories than before you started dieting…and that’s why you lose weight.

The best diet type to follow in preparation for your wedding is a simple low calorie diet.

Restricting Calories

Restrict calories slowly and only moderately from your baseline caloric intake. Keeping within the range of 200-600 calories reduced, you’ll experience safe, healthy, and lasting weight loss.

The following table shows you the number of calories to reduce from your baseline, both at the start and at the maximum reduction. This is your guide to healthy weight loss.

Baseline Intake/Start Restriction/Maximum Restriction

2000/200/400
2300/250/450
2600/300/500
2900/350/550
3000/400/600

If you normally eat 2300 calories per day, then start by reducing your daily intake by 250 calories. Gradually work towards reducing your daily intake by 450 calories.

What to Eat

Eat a balanced diet. Each day eat 35-45% lean protein, 25-35% complex carbohydrates, and 15-25% fat. Healthy fats, like Omega-3 from fish, can substitute for a lean protein source.

Each meal eat 1 source of lean protein, 1 serving of complex carbohydrate, and 2-3 servings of vegetables and fruit. Limit simple carbohydrates (sugars) and unhealthy fats, like saturated fats and trans-fatty-acids, to just a few servings per week.

Wedding Exercises

Your diet type and weight loss plan are not complete without exercise. The most critical aspect of exercise is to tone muscle.

The good news? There’s a simple and effective way to tone muscle and lose weight. Not only that, with toned muscle, you’ll look tight and buff, surprising all of your guests.

You can find the instructions to toning muscle at Wedding Exercises.

Cosmetic Surgery – Is Picking A Surgeon Pot Luck?

Writen by Pearl Deloria

The decision to have any form of cosmetic or plastic surgery is a very big one to make, there are many risks involved and sometimes, after hearing many horror stories in the press, it’s as if choosing a surgeon is a lottery.

Amongst other things, surgery is very expensive, granted, costs have come down considerably over the years, but it is still very expensive to the average person.

There are cheaper options, like going abroad to have your surgery performed, you can stay in a hotel and relax by the pool while you recover. But personally the thought of having my surgery performed by someone that doesn’t even speak my language worries me.

Once you have your mind made up that surgery is what you want, the next step is to find a good surgeon. Did you know that within the US it is legal for a doctor regardless of their speciality to perform “cosmetic surgery” but not “plastic surgery”?

When your health is involved, it’s best not to cut corners, if you would pardon the pun, and not substitute a quality procedure for cost.

In the US there is only one entity overseeing Physicians performing plastic surgery and that is the American Board of Medical Specialities, so you must make sure that your surgeon is board certified by them. There are other “fake medical boards” but they are not recognised by the ABMS so don’t even touch a surgeon whose credentials do not include the ABMS. For a surgeon to be certified by them they need to have completed around 5-7 years of surgical residency training after medical school, or possibly more depending on the programme.

In the UK, the surgeon must firstly be registered on the General Medical Council, and then must be a member of either the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPS) or British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). With all surgeons, experience is vital, you must check how many procedures they have done, ideally they should be performing cosmetic surgery operations daily. There is a ton of resources on the internet regarding plastic surgery, you must research thoroughly before you go ahead with an operation. If surgery is what you truly want, do not take it lightly. It is your body, your health and it is your right to find out and ask as many questions as is required to feel satisfied that you are making the right decision.

Electrolysis: Permanent Hair Removal For Men and Women

Writen by C Mueller

Electrolysis is a hair removal option that is generally considered to offer permanent hair removal. It was invented over 130 years ago so it’s by far the oldest option available and therefore has a long track record.

Electrolysis was originally used to treat ingrown eyelashes but developed into a wider use hair removal procedure for many other body parts.

A person who is trained to perform the procedure is referred to as an Electrologist.

Electrolysis uses a sterilized needle which is inserted into each hair follicle. A small electrical current is then delivered to the base of the follicle to destroy the hair growth cells.

When done properly, the end result is that the hair is unable to regrow resulting in the permanent removal of the unwanted hair without damage to the skin.

Given that each hair needs to be treated individually, you can probably imagine that this is one of the biggest considerations when looking at Electrolysis as your hair removal option.

Compared to newer non-permanent hair removal choices that can cover larger areas of hair quicker, Electrolysis can be a more time-consuming process for areas that have large amounts of unwanted hair.

In other words, the tradeoff is between permanent hair removal with Electrolysis or possibly faster treatment times with other non-permanent hair removal options that at best might offer permanent hair reduction or long term hair reduction.

As with other hair removal options, success and possible side effects of the hair removal will vary by patient.

Temporary and permanent hair removal technology is evolving constantly and is relevant to both men and women who want to remove unwanted hair.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Searching For The Causes

Writen by Robert Thatcher

Alzheimer’s disease is irreversible. It slowly eats the cognitive functioning of the people affected by it. The mind slowly deteriorates and even the carrying out of simple tasks may be severely affected. The risks of developing this brain disease run high by the age of 60 and older. It is normally characterized by loss of reason, memory, language facility and judgment.

Contrary to common belief, Alzheimer’s disease is not an element of normal aging. It is a disease that depreciates the brain. Without this, human brain often functions well even up to an individual’s 100th years.

Four million Americans are known to have Alzheimer’s disease and this number is expected to rise to 14 million by the year 2050. Given that the current trend of American population is constant and no advanced treatment is discovered in opposition from this disease. The average number of people with Alzheimer’s disease doubles every year from 1995 to 2005. This increase is determined to be the cause of the two playing factors: 1) people tend to be prone to risks of getting the Alzheimer’s disease as they age and 2) the significant growth of the number of older people, especially those who age 85 years and older.

There are two types of Alzheimer’s disease. The FAD or the Familial Alzheimer’s Disease that are typically inherited and usually inflicts people aged 30 to 60. The second type is the late-onset Alzheimer’s disease is the more common form that affects people age 65 and more. The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is yet to be revealed. However, research points out that it is the result of complex events that occur in the brain for certain duration of time. Yet the present-day concept of how this disease develops is roughly divided into the following:

Genetic Factors and the Beta-amyloid

Mutations on the APP or the amyloid precursor protein is squarely defined as one of the causes of the Alzheimer’s disease, which then highlights the role of the beta-amyloid to the disease. Beta-amyloid is the protein fragment- the key component of the AD plaques. Research points out the mutations in any of the three genes namely the Chromosome 1, 14 and 21 can significantly add to the presence of the beta-amyloid in the brain. This condition applies for the early onset AD.

For the late-onset AD however, the Chromosome 19 is known to be playing as a risk factor. They identified that a certain protein named ApoE or apolipoprotein E binds quickly and tightly to the beta-amyloid.

Tau

The tau is a protein normally found in the nerve cells in the brain. A person with AD has abnormal tangled filaments in the neurons.

Cardiovascular Risk Factors

There are potential links to the causes of cardiovascular diseases and AD according to recent studies. One of which is an amino acid termed as the homocysteine I both a risk factor to AD and heart disease.

Oxidative Damage from Free Radicals

The damage in the neurons caused by the build up of too much free radicals is called the oxidative damage. This process may contribute to the degeneration of the brain by upsetting the flows of substances from the cells.

Inflammation

The inflammation factor is still debatable. Researchers argue if inflammation is good or bad for the development of AD. Some thinks that inflammation is instrumental to the death of some neurons, some proposes that inflammation is a component in the brain’s healing process.

Brain Infarction

Evidences that people who have experienced stroke in certain brain regions are likely to develop AD.

These findings are the current known causes for developing the disease. Yet many of which are yet to be researched and studied accordingly.

Are Fat Burners Like Hoodia Gordonii Effective Or Useless?

Writen by Phil Beckett

Fat burners like hoodia gordonii are everywhere with each one being promoted as the best fat burners ever.

Let’s face it most of us, possibly you included, want to drop excess weight and have probably been tempted by the various fat burning pills available. You may have already tried some and had varying degrees of success.

By now you have likely heard all about hoodia gordonii. It’s the latest in a long line of so-called wonderful discoveries that is supposed to give you the physical results you want, by getting rid of your excess weight without all the usual hard work and dedication.

But are fat burners that contain this new ingredient any better or any worse than all the others? Is it really as good as they say? Is it even possible for it to work? Are there any side effects?

Well let’s take a look at it and find out.

One Study Has Shown That It May Be Able To Reduce Hunger Pains Quite Substantially…

When trying to drop any excess pounds through a reduced calorie diet or simply by avoiding all the so-called bad foods, hunger pains are usually one of the biggest initial hurdles to get over. For a lot of people the hunger pains are so great that they give up within a couple days.

One study has been used quite extensively in the marketing of many fat burners that contain Hoodia Gordonii. This study set out to try and show that this new ingredient could help people drop a substantial amount of weight through appetite suppression.

The subjects used in this study were all obese and were given hoodia gordonii, by itself and not in combination with any ingredients commonly found in fat burners, and left in a room with nothing to do except watch television, read books and eat.

These subjects, as a group, were reported to have eaten approximately 1000 calories less per day than the control group. The control group was given a placebo.

Their conclusions were that the active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii may be able to tell a persons brain that their stomach is full. Of course reducing hunger pains will go a long way in helping people to naturally drop some body weight.

But keep in mind, if you curb your hunger pains too much and don’t eat the food you need, such as protein, you will lose lean muscle mass. This will slow down your metabolism and cause even more weight problems in the future.

So was it really an accurate study?

Where Did Hoodia Gordonii Come From?

Well in short, it’s an African cactus that grows primarily in the Kalahari desert. Legend has it that the bushmen of this part of the world have eaten Hoodia Gordonii for thousands of years with no negative side effects.

It should be pointed out however, that the bushmen only occasionally use Hoodia Gordonii. No one yet knows if there will be any negative side effects if it’s used daily for an extended period of time.

Many more studies are indeed needed to know for sure.

Now, Will Any Fat Burners Containing Hoodia Gordonii Help You With Your Weight Problem?

A certain molecule known as P.57 is apparently what’s responsible for a reduction in hunger when taking some fat burners that contain hoodia gordonii. Tests conducted on both humans and animals have shown similar results.

There has been at least one study that has demonstrated that someone can decrease their appetite by as much as 40%. But as mentioned before, this isn’t always a good thing, even when trying to lose extra pounds.

Here is another interesting point. It appears that the P.57 molecule responsible for a reduction in hunger does not work if your diet consists of high carbohydrates, sugary foods or when your hunger is caused by physical exercise.

High carbohydrates and too much processed sugar are some of the reasons most people are overweight in the first place. So if it doesn’t help your tendency to overeat these types of foods, what use is it?

A lot more testing on the effectiveness and safety of hoodia gordonii and fat burners that contain it, are needed. It’s also been reported that not all fat burners that claim to contain Hoodia Gordonii are prepared the same.

The active ingredient in many fat burners containing hoodia is not enough to give you the results you want so if you’re going to try it, select carefully.

Make no mistake about it…the only way to get in the best shape of your life is to change your habits. Start exercising, eat properly and only when you have these areas covered should you attempt to add in any supplement.

Just because you suppress your appetite doesn’t mean that you will lose what you want to lose. No product should be used as an alternative to exercise, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
