How Sugar Makes You Fat

Writen by Ben Greenfield

Look at how many grams of sugar are in what you’re eating (on the nutritional label). Now divide that number by 4. That’s how many teaspoons of pure sugar you’re consuming. Kinda scary, huh? Sugar makes you fat and fat-free food isn’t really free of fat. I’ve said it before in multiple articles, but occasionally, I’ve had someone lean over my desk and say “How in the heck does sugar make you fat if there’s no fat in it?”. This article will answer that puzzler, and provide you with some helpful suggestions to achieve not only weight loss success, but improved body health.

First, let’s make some qualifications. Sugar isn’t inherently evil. Your body uses sugar to survive, and burns sugar to provide you with the energy necessary for life. Many truly healthy foods are actually broken down to sugar in the body – through the conversion of long and complex sugars called polysaccharides into short and simple sugars called monosaccharides, such as glucose. In additions to the breakdown products of fat and protein, glucose is a great energy source for your body.

However, there are two ways that sugar can sabotage your body and cause fat storage. Excess glucose is the first problem, and it involves a very simple concept. Anytime you have filled your body with more fuel than it actually needs (and this is very easy to do when eating foods with high sugar content), your liver’s sugar storage capacity is exceeded. When the liver is maximally full, the excess sugar is converted by the liver into fatty acids (that’s right – fat!) and returned to the bloodstream, where is taken throughout your body and stored (that’s right – as fat!) wherever you tend to store adipose fat cells, including, but not limited to, the popular regions of the stomach, hips, butt, and breasts.

As an unfortunate bonus, once these regions are full of adipose tissue, the fatty acids begin to spill over into your organs, like the heart, liver, and kidneys. This reduces organ ability, raises blood pressure, decreases metabolism, and weakens the immune system.

Not good!

Excess insulin is the second problem. Insulin is a major hormone in the body, and is released in high levels anytime you ingest what would be considered a “simple” carbohydrate, which would include, but not be limited to: fruit juice, white bread, most “wheat” bread (basically white bread with a little extra fiber), white rice, baked white potato, bagels, croissants, pretzels, graham crackers, vanilla wafers, waffles, corn chips, cornflakes, cake, jelly beans, sugary drinks, Gatorade, beer, and anything that has high fructose corn syrup on the nutritional label.

Two actions occur when the insulin levels are spiked. First, the body’s fat burning process is shut down so that the sugar that has just been ingested can be immediately used for energy. Then, insulin takes all that sugar and puts it into your muscles. Well, not quite! Actually, most of us, except those random Ironman triathletes and 8000-calories-per-day exercisers, walk around with fairly full energy stores in the muscles. As soon as the muscles energy stores are full, the excess sugars are converted to fat and, just like the fatty acids released from the liver, stored as adipose tissue on our waistline.

But that’s not all. After the blood sugar has been reduced by going into the muscles or being converted to fat in the liver, the feedback mechanism that tells the body to stop producing insulin is slightly delayed, so blood sugar levels fall even lower, below normal measurements. This causes 1) an immediate increase in appetite, which is usually remedied by eating more food; 2) the production of a stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol triggers the release of stored sugar from the liver to bring blood sugar levels back up, which, combined with the meal you eat from your appetite increase, begins the entire “fat storage, metabolic decrease” process over again.

This process of destabilizing blood sugar levels and sending your body on a roller coaster ride can occur throughout an entire day, week, or month. The excessive cortisol that accumulates in the body eventually distresses your hormonal system and results in other problems, including a further decrease in metabolism, obesity, depression, allergies, immune weakness, chronic fatigue syndrome and other serious side effects.

So what kind of carbohydrates can you eat to avoid de-stabilizing blood sugar levels, constantly sabotaging your weight loss, and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in health care as you get older? Here is a list of carbohydrates do not trigger such a strong insulin response and instead provide long-term, stabilized energy: apples, oranges, pears, plums, grapes, bananas (not overly ripened), grapefruit, oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat spaghetti and egg fettuccine, whole- wheat pasta, bran cereal, barley, bulgur, basmati, Kashi and other whole grains, beans, peas (especially chick and black-eyed), lentils, whole corn, sweet potatoes, yams, milk, yogurt (preferably low-fat or fat-free) and soy. Stay away from processed and packaged foods as much as possible, because they are highly likely to include artificial sweeteners (which basically have a similar effect as sugar), as well as simple and refined sugars. Keep your eye out for ingredients that include sucrose, maltose, dextrose, fructose, galactose, glucose, arabinose, ribose, xylose, deoxyribose, lactose, and other fake names for sugars. Even “healthy” juice and many health food products will need to be avoided if they contain high levels of sugar.

Acne – Does Food Make A Difference?

Writen by CD Mohatta

In the quest to cure acne faster and prevent it, medical science is looking at all the possible causes and treatments. In this respect various foods are getting examined and doctors are trying to find out if food has any connection with acne formation. Let us find out more about it.

Acne and chocolates

Many people believe that chocolates make acne worse. Many people believe that oily food will cause oily skin and make them more susceptible to acne. Acne formation does depend on stress. Genetics may have a definite role in acne formation. Why a teenager has got face full of spots, while other gets none. These are the mysteries of human body. Both produce hormones and both are at the age when most of the teenagers should expect acne. But some of them don’t get any. Some of them not only get acne in adolescence but keep on getting it as they grow up.

Acne and food connection

There may be a connection between eating a particular food and getting acne. But science has yet to come to a conclusion about it. That does not mean that your acne may not be getting by a particular food. Science has not solved all the mysteries and many of grandma’s recipes work for no scientific reason. It is for you to make a chart of food and acne. Whenever you get a flare up, try to find out if you had eaten any particular food. If this match continues, avoid that food.

Beauty And The Beast – The Answer To Being Beautiful

Writen by Kacy Carr

It is said that absence makes the heart grow fonder – well so does Beauty – the more you peer at something beautiful the more you yearn for it. Beauty injects an essence of elegance – an emotion felt within which comes with feeling good about your self. But leading a healthy lifestyle has to be the most important of all.

Health plays a major role in contributing to the beautiful feeling experienced when looking good. Many women tend to suffer from Beauty and the Beast syndrome – where one day an effort is made to look good and then the next – no matter what you do – it just is not happening. Why? Well it is no secret; there are two main key issues to take claim of being beautiful. and that is the (take 2 factor) number 1 look good and 2 is feel good – if you don`t feel good about yourself then don`t expect to look good.

Transformation can take place in the beauty department if you make a stand and sort yourself out. Your health dominates how you feel – how you look and how you think so any concerns that are causing you sorrow whether it be a health or beauty matter then remember a problem shared is a problem halved. Speak with your local GP and once you are given the all clear – take note of the change in your whole entity, a personality change comes with looking beautiful.

A fabulous way to find the beauty within – is to let it out. Inner beauty can be released by practising yoga. Yoga is an amazing exercise that understands what the body`s wants and needs are. Anxiety and tension bring on frowns – meaning more wrinkles, this is not part of any known beauty package. A beautiful person injects happiness and smiles that come from the heart (a healthy one)

Feeling good about your self is the first step in the right direction to making your beauty regime a more pleasurable one – guaranteed. Once you have claimed a content mind minus any matters of concern – it is then after you apply your beauty cosmetics you will notice the mirror image of yourself will be that of a changed person. Confront the reflection of the beast in the mirror and watch the beauty transformation take place. Notice how the facial skin turns to that of a fresh complexion – see how the lip gloss is now a glow. All because you feel good.

Beauty /Health magazines have wonderful ideas and tips on being beautiful and you will find many online support centres on beauty very fulfilling but what you have to bear in mind is, these beauty support groups on health and fashion do just that – give advice.

This is about you and being beautiful so regardless of whether the advice given, is by Sharon Stone, you are never going to experience that feeling of walking along the red carpet unless you feel good.

Cystic Acne and Some Natural Treatments

Writen by Greg Podsakoff

More severe cases of acne tend to be characterized not just by the presence of pimples and blemishes, but also by the formation of nodules or cysts. Acne that involves the development of cysts is called cystic acne.

A cystic acne lesion is much larger than a regular pimple, sometimes 5mm or more in diameter. These lesions can be hard and painful. Cystic acne lesions are filled with pus but should not be squeezed. Squeezing a cystic lesion can lead to a worse infection and inflammation. The lesions are prone to scarring and should be taken care of by a dermatologist, who often uses procedures to reduce swelling and to lessen the likelihood of scar formation.

In severe cases of cystic acne, it may be a good idea to consult a dermatologist about treatment. But there are many holistic remedies and preventative measures one can take against cystic acne. An alternative medicine practitioner should be consulted about some of these holistic remedies, while other more common procedures can easily be performed at home with no medical supervision.

Many dermatologists and alternative medicine practitioners believe that cystic acne can be controlled to some degree through diet. Cystic acne is often the result of an unknown allergic reaction to particular foods.

The first step in controlling cystic acne through diet is to experiment with the systematic elimination of certain foods. It is also helpful to add certain foods to your diet that are known to help in the recovery of severely acne prone skin.

Sugary foods and foods that contain milk or dairy products are commonly the trigger for cystic acne. As you experiment with eliminating these food types, be sure to read package labels closely so that you are not ingesting sugar and dairy products unknowingly. Be aware that it may be several weeks before you notice a change.

Foods containing trans-fatty acids are also a common irritant to skin prone to cystic acne. Foods like margarine, shortening, fried foods, salty snacks, soda, and meat contain trans-fatty acids and should be avoided.

Many people who suffer from cystic acne find that the addition of fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin A carotene can help to ease their condition. These foods include dark leafy vegetables, and yellow-orange vegetables and fruits such as carrots, yams, and squash.

It is also helpful to drink up to four quarts of purified water a day to eliminate toxins and to help the transportation of essential nutrients to the skin.

Cystic acne can also be aggravated by stress. Alternative medicine practitioners often suggest making yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation part of your daily activities. These activities can help to reduce stress levels, thereby decreasing the skin’s tendency to produce cystic acne lesions. Getting enough sleep is also essential in holistic therapy treatments.

Sufficient and appropriate cleansing is also an important part of holistically taking care of skin prone to cystic acne.

To clean your skin effectively, wash it gently twice a day using warm water. Do not scrub or use harsh cleansing agents that are abrasive or high in Ph, which can aggravate the condition. Mild soaps are more effective. To dry your skin, pat it gently with a soft towel.

If you are considering treating cystic acne holistically, these tips are a good place to start. You may wish to consult an alternative medicine practitioner about further herbal and holistic therapies.

ABC’s of Thinning Hair

Writen by Drew Voight

About Thinning Hair
Many people have a misconception concerning “thinning hair.” So the obvious question needing to be answered is exactly what is meant by the term thinning hair?

Actually, the term itself is a misnomer. It’s nearly impossible for human hair to become thinner over time. What exactly is happening on your head … results in an optical illusion which becomes evident in every mirror you gave at.

You see … typically roughly 10% of your hair follicles aren’t growing. These follicles eventually are shed or sloughed off by the body. That’s why you find them all over your pillow the next morning. Yet when more than 10% of the hair sheds, the appearance is that the hair is thinning; and hence, the term “thinning hair”.

Thinning Hair Causes
Thinning hair can be caused by as many factors as hairs still upon your head. By far however, the most common cause for thinning hair in men is a poor diet. Our diets often plays a role in determining how much (or how fast) thinning hair occurs. Of importance … are the so-called “crash” diets that shock the system either by overloading on a particular nutrient – or denying it altogether.

In addition, specific vitamin deficiencies and/or excesses can cause thinning hair. To be specific … an excess of Vitamin A (sometimes called “Vitamin A toxicity”), or a deficiency of Vitamin C, B, or the minerals iron, zinc, or biotin can also lead to thinning hair.

Of course, excessive “hair care” (which is not all that caring in the long run!) can lead to thinning hair. Men who bleach or dye their hair on a regular basis can experience some hair thinning. This, however, can be mitigated somewhat by the use of high quality shampoos and conditioners which strengthen the hair shaft.

And last but certainly not least, is the dreaded s-word: stress! Stress often plays a significant role in thinning hair (or the lack of thinning hair). In many cases, issues related to stress unleash dietary and nutritional problems that ultimately influence thinning hair.

Thinning Hair Treatment
Dealing with thinning hair can be challenging; especially when, for some, the thinning is the result of hereditary forces at work, and not necessarily health or lifestyle-related ones. However, regardless of whether the thinning hair is hereditary, thinning hair can be mitigated (at least somewhat) by some available treatments.

Drew Voight writes for 4-Men.Org on a variety of subjects. His emphasis is on Hair Loss and more specifically thinning hair in men.

Hemorrhoids Info

Writen by Ferry Issackk

Hemorrhoids (sometimes called ‘piles’) are small lumps of tissue composed of blood vessels, muscle, and elastic fibers. Hemorrhoids are always present in the anal canal, just past the anus. It is only when they become inflamed and enlarged that they cause problems.

Hemorrhoids are not choosy when they pick their victims. Men and women are equally affected, though those between the ages of 40 and 60 seem to have a higher rate of hemorrhoids, as well as pregnant women.

Hemorrhoids are not inherently dangerous unless they bleed continually. Their location means that they are fed by arterial blood, so those who have a hard time clotting or have a lowered immune system may consider hemorrhoids a more serious problems than others. Caused by poor diet and straining to pass bowel movements when constipated, hemorrhoids are easier to prevent than they are to treat.

Prevention is as simple as eating right. Leafy green vegetables, beets, apples, whole grains and other foods high in fiber are a great start. Fiber is the greatest defense against constipation. Herbal supplements like psyllium seed help as well, if your diet is poor. Start with small doses, though, and work your way up. Adding prune juice to your diet is helpful as well.

Drinking plenty of liquids that are non-caffeinated will also help constipation fade quickly if hemorrhoids do appear, keeping the inflammation to a minimum. Simple things like keeping the area clean and wiping gently with non-perfumed, non-colored toilet paper will help the hemorrhoids heal more quickly.

hemorrhoiddomain.com is a free information site that offers articles and resources on Hemorrhoids. If you want to read or share information on Health and Fitness, you’re always welcome!

Hair Loss Prevention through Ayurveda

Writen by Dr. Savitha Suri

Hair loss is experienced by all of us at one or the other time. To know the causes of hair fall, it is very essential to know the structure of hair and its normal growth cycle.

Structure of hair

The hair on our scalp can be divided into two parts, the root and shaft. The root part of hair is in the skin (epidermis) of scalp. The hair root is surrounded by a pouch like structure called follicle. The base of hair root is in the shape of a bulb. This bulb is indented by capillaries and nerve fibers. The cells in the center of bulb divide. The newly divided hair cells push the previous cells up. The cells which move upwards die slowly forming hard hair shaft.

The hair shaft has three layers the cuticle, medulla and cortex.

Cuticle is the outer layers and protects the inner layers. It is transparent. Healthy cuticle gives a shiny appearance for hair and unhealthy cuticle gives lifeless look

Medulla is the innermost layer composed of large cells.

Cortex is the layer between cuticle and medulla. This contains pigment and keratin. Cortex determines the bulk and strength of hair.

The hair follicle contains oil secreting glands which make the hair shiny .Stress and illness diminish secretion of oil and pigments causing graying of hair.

According to Ayurveda the hair is considered as a tissue which uses the same nutrients of bone and considered as a tissue which is formed as bi-product of bone tissue.

Normal cycle of hair growth.

About 10 % of the hair on the scalp is in a resting phase at any given time. The resting hair falls after 2 to 3 months and new hair starts growing in its place. The growing phase continues for 2.25 to 6 yrs. During this phase each hair grows approximately 1 cm per month. At any given time about 90% of the hair on scalp will be in growing phase.

Few strands of hair fall as the part of normal hair growth cycle. But some people may experience excessive hair fall which is more than normal cycle. Excessive hair loss can affect men, women and children.

Causes of hair loss

1. Hormonal imbalance in men and women: In men high concentration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair follicles causes hair fall. In women hormonal imbalances during pregnancy and after delivery cause hair fall.

2. High amount of sebum in scalp clogs pores of scalp and prevent nutrition to hair follicle.

3. Inadequate nutrition causes hair fall.

4. Stress, worry, lack of sleep, worry and anxiety cause hair fall

5. Long standing diseases like typhoid, viral infections, anemia, surgery etc cause general debility which lead to hair fall

6. Some medicines used for gout, chemo therapy of cancer , birth control pills , antidepressants etc cause hair fall

7. Diseases like lupus, diabetes cause hair fall.

8. Tying hair tightly pulls the hair from follicles and cause traction alopecia.

9. Heredity also causes hair fall.

10. Dandruff or Fungal infection of scalp.

11. Accumulation of dirt on scalp causes blocking of pores and weakens hair roots. This leads to hair fall.

According to ayurveda the causes of hair loss are described as follows

1. Too much exposure to dust, sunlight, water and other pollutants.

2. Too much of sweating.

3. Irregular sleeping pattern.

4. Anxiety, depression, insomnia.

5. Unhygienic way of living

6. Diseases

7. Alcohol consumption.

Hair loss Remedies

1. Liberal intake of vitamins.

2. High protein and iron rich diet.

3. Consumption of raw vegetables, fresh fruits, salads, green leafy vegetables regularly.

4. Washing hair regularly ( twice weekly ) with suitable shampoo.

5. Using relaxing techniques to overcome stress, anxiety and sleeplessness.

6. Preventing fungal infections of scalp.

7. Preventing hairstyles which pull hair.

Due to these causes the tridoshas get vitiated and cause hair loss. The vitiated doshas affect the scalp skin and cause hair fall occurs. Medicated oil with the herbs Bhringaraja ( Eclipta Alba ), Amalaki ( Embelica officinalis ), Haritaki ( Terminalia chebula ) and Vibhitaki ( Terminalia bellirica ) is a best remedy for hair fall.

5 big reasons to consider using lutein supplements

5 Big Reasons to Consider Using Lutein Supplements

Writen by Dan Ho

What if I told you there was a nutrient that afforded a broad range of protection…from possibly warding off certain types of cancer, to protecing against bad cholesterol, to alleviating arthritis aches, to countering free radical damage and, most famously of all, to protecting and preserving the vision of the eyes?

Such a nutrient does indeed exist, and what you’ve just read are 5 big reasons to consider using lutein supplements that supply an adequate lutein dosage or eat foods containing lutein.

Lutein has received its fair share of accolades in recent years as major studies have shown that it can be of great benefit for eye health. In fact, it is now recommended by many natural health experts for the middle aged and beyond to help prevent macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in those over 60 years old.

Millions of people in the United States alone are afflicted with macular degeneration.

What’s really tragic is a lot of this could be avoided with proper nutrition. Eat more foods containing lutein as a start, which would include: spinach, kale, broccoli, collard greens, and other green leafy vegetables.

Egg yolks are also one of the best foods containing lutein.

One should not rely solely on supplements with lutein because a good diet should always be your starting point for good health.

If you begin eating more leafy green veggies that are naturally rich in lutein, you probably do not need to use more than 4 to 5 mg per day from a good lutein supplement if you are middle aged or beyond.

However, this is assuming that you are eating a varied and healthy diet.

If the case is, like many people, you are not eating many foods containing lutein, then you should consider a higher lutein dosage as part of your daily supplement regimen.

Other reasons you might want to consider adding lutein supplements to your regimen are:

  • a possible role in keeping arteries clear from LDL cholesterol, which in turn will help protect cardiovascular health.
  • studies revealing that colon cancer may be significantly reduced with lutein use
  • antioxidant properties of lutein may help mitigate osteoarthritis aches

Although lutein has been touted as a key nutrient for eye health, other vitamins and minerals and nutrients have also been shown to help significantly include: zeaxanthin, the minerals zinc and selenium, and vitamins C and E.

Get more facts, info on foods containing lutein, and learn how to choose a quality lutein supplement at: http://www.nutritional-supplement-info.com/lutein.html.

Building Immunity: Flushing the System

Writen by Jan Verhoeff

There’s nothing like a cup of hot lemon juice first thing in the morning! Yum.

Ooops, no sugar in that lemonade?

Well… Okay. Sounds like a challenge, but it works. Over winter I was under a lot of stress, and it’s beginning to subside, but the result is I’m feeling a bit ‘under the weather’. So, today, I was looking for a cure, and the lady at the health food store reminded me of a tip I got several years ago.

You need your sunshine.

First thing in the morning, a cup of HOT water and the juice of one lemon, or you can puree a whole lemon and add it to your hot water for a fiber rich detoxification drink that builds your immune system. Yes, it will make you pucker, and when it works, by reducing stress, improving your body chemistry, and making you feel better, it’ll make you kissable too.

Now, the trick is, we should be doing this for five days every month. But, if you’re not doing it yet, kick start your immunity building, system flushing, daily habit by doing this for two weeks the first month. It’ll activate all those body parts you don’t normally want to discuss, so you won’t have to discuss them.

And… If you’re older than dirt (anyone over 30 – according to my 11 year old son) you might help the process along with one olive leaf extract and ara-larix tablet every morning and every night during those first two weeks, following with one a day to keep your body’s immune system going strong.

As the song goes, put a little sunshine (read lemon) in your morning…

I wonder if he’ll get over that dirt notion as he gets closer to 30?

Get That Diet Monkey Off Your Back – 2!

Writen by Gillian Tarawhiti

The big question at the end of the last article was whether the DIET MONKEY would loosen its grip or hold on for dear life. The answer that DIET MONKEY is alive and well and hasn’t loosen its grip at all. In fact I think for some it has moved in and taken up residency.

It has been amazing to see that all the other participants in the Biggest Losers club, method of losing weight involved starving themselves, when that didn’t work because they ended up gorging themselves, they tried pills and shakes, then for some reason that didn’t work so they went back to starving themselves againwhich didn’t work. So the cycle was never ending, hence that DIET MONKEY taking up residency.

All the participants fell into the ‘3 reasons why we fail at dieting’ category being: fanatical dieting, emotional eating or conditioning. The fanatical dieters jumped from one diet to another, the emotional eaters had no idea why they were eating continuously other than they THOUGHT they were hungry and those who fell into the conditioning pattern, did what they knew – starving themselves, because that is what they have always done (regardless that it never worked in the past).

Our Biggest Losers challenge ended and as a writer I’ve gained a lot of subject matter that would fill at least 2 or 3 books on the fact that DIETS DON’T WORK. Oh by the wayI WAS THE BIGGEST LOSER. I of course, had an unfair advantage because I used a program I created, called Gain Back Your Life Weight Loss Program. This program has helped others lose weight and keep it off. It doesn’t involve diets or dieting as such, it reveals the truth about exercise, helps you to supercharge your metabolism, stopping those cravings and more.

We have started a Biggest Losers II and this time I have shared my knowledge with the previous participants. Let’s see if we can finally shake that diet monkey of their backs.
