Anorexia – What Are The Dangers Of The Anorexia Disease?

Writen by Ian Mason

What is anorexia and what are some of the dangers? Anorexia is simply one of several eating disorders that is plaguing many of our young men and women. Over 7 million women and 1 million men struggle with anorexia nervosa within the United States alone. It is a disease that is truly indiscriminate, both men and women, rich and poor, young and old, and all minorities are affected by the disease. When anorexia is reported, 86% of those reports are given by people 20 years old and younger. Since anorexia and other eating disorders are so widespread, the best way to combat their spread is to promote public awareness. So, what are some of the signs someone is struggling with an eating disorder?

Those suffering from an eating disorder will have odd habits regarding food, self-image, and exercise. Some skip meals, some will not eat in front of others, while others still will chew their food only to spit it out shortly thereafter. Often times excuses will be used to explain their erratic diet or their appearance to others. Many anorectics eliminate much of the fat from their diet while eating only a handful of carefully chosen foods which they view as “safe”. Other things to take note would be if your loved one is using laxatives and diet pills on top of a highly restricted diet. That’s a sure sign of an eating disorder. To further jeopardize themselves, anorectics will often times exercise on a compulsive level even though their energy is limited. Typically, all of this is done while under the phony facade of contentment. Many refuse to discuss their emotions, claiming that all is fine in the world when exactly the opposite more closely resembles the truth. However, this list is not authoritative, these are only a few of the key points that need to be watched if you believe a loved one to be anorexic.

If the aforementioned warning signs are neglected, then one needs to be prepared for the serious health complications that often accompany anorexia and other eating disorders. A short list of complications would include irregular heartbeat, heart failure, kidney failure, liver damage, permanent loss of bone mass, destruction of teeth, ruptured esophagus, seizures, and cessation of menses, just to name a few. One will even become so weak so that the muscles in your pelvic floor are unable to hold in the vagina, and one will become incontinent. The consequences are truly horrendous. It has even been conjectured that Terri Schiavo fell into her vegetative state from a violent heart attack brought on by extreme dehydration as a result of an electrolyte imbalance. She allegedly had an eating disorder and the few minutes of oxygen deprivation ruined her brain and the last 15 years of her life. Let her story serve as the path not to follow. If levels of deprivation are carried on long enough, things of this magnitude will undoubtedly happen to you or the one you love. Intervene by any reasonable means necessary to help those that can no longer help themselves.

Can Magnetic Therapy Really Relieve Migraine Headaches?

Writen by Debbie Shimadry

Virtually everybody has suffered from a headaches at one time in their life. There are many causes for getting headaches. But what about migraines?

What is a Migraine?

A migraine is a type of headache that’s often severe. Although any head pain can be miserable, migraines are often disabling. In about 15 percent of cases, these painful headaches are preceded by a sensory warning sign (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. Migraines are also often accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine pain can be excruciating and may incapacitate you for hours or even days. Fortunately, migraine pain management has improved dramatically in the last decade.

What are the signs and symptoms of a migraine?

A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms:

Moderate to severe pain 60 percent of migraine sufferers feel pain on only one side of their head, while 40 percent experience pain on both sides

Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality

Pain that worsens with physical activity

Pain that hinders your regular daily activities

Nausea with or without vomiting

Sensitivity to light and sound

When left untreated, migraines typically last from four to 72 hours, but the frequency with which they occur can vary from person to person. You may have migraine headaches several times a month or just once or twice a year.

Not all migraines are the same. Eighty-five percent of people suffer from migraines without auras, which were previously called common migraines. About 15 percent of adults have migraine headaches with auras, which were previously called classic migraines. If you’re in the second group, you’ll likely have auras about 15 to 30 minutes before your headache begins. They may continue after your headache starts or even occur after your headache begins.

These may include:

Sparkling flashes of light

Dazzling zigzag lines in your field of vision

Slowly spreading blind spots in your vision

Tingling, pins-and-needles sensations in one arm or leg

Rarely, weakness or language and speech problems

Magnetic treatment of migraines and headaches.

Magnets are known to stimulate hormone production with in the body, it is this action that makes magnets extremely effective in the prevention and treatment of migraine headaches. When magnets are placed around the head the electromagnetic pulses generated by the magnetic field will cause increased electric activity with in the brain. This increases conductivity between neural pathways, which in turn stimulates the areas of the brain that are responsible for hormone production, namely the hormones serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is the hormone that controls mood, commonly associated with migraine, stress and depression.

Melatonin is responsible for the internal body clock, it is associated with insomnia, seasonal dysfunction disorder and migraine. Magnetic fields around the head will gradually over a period of days increase the bodies levels of serotonin and melatonin plus magnets are known to increase the blood levels of endorphins which are known as happy hormones as they give a euphoric feeling, they also are the bodies natural pain killers. The combination of the increase of these 3 hormones will help prevent the onset of a migraine or if you already have a migraine it will be less intense plus the duration of the migraine will be greatly reduced.

Common treatments for migraine are:

1. A magnetic pillow pad. If a magnetic pillow pad is used on a daily basis ( placed inside your pillowcase, on top of your normal pillow) it can actually reduce the incidence of migraines. As a the brain is exposed to a strong magnetic field every night the brain will be stimulated daily to increase production of serotonin ,melatonin and endorphins. The effect of this will be that these hormone levels do not drop to abnormal levels which would usually trigger a migraine.

2. A magnetic head band. This is a very basis and functional strap that is placed around the head , much like a sweat band. It contains 800 Gauss/ 80 m tesla magnets and is worn at the onset of a headache/migraine. The disadvantage is that as you only wear when you have a headache it does not work to prevent migraines occurring but it is effective at treating migraines once they have commenced. It’s main draw back is that it is not very attractive to wear any many people would not like to use it in a public place. This will reduce its effectiveness if your migraine/headache starts outside the home.

3. A magnetic eye mask. This has the same mechanism as the head band but is a mask that covers the eyes. This is very soothing if you have a tension related migraine or if you suffer from dizziness, flashing lights or spots obscuring your vision during a migraine. People report that the eye mask is very effective in the treatment of migraine pain plus in addition to wearing it at the onset and during a migraine it can be worn every night during sleep and will have a similar effect to that of the pillow pad. Long term use of magnetic devices can completely eradicate hormonally induced migraines and dramatically reduce the occurrence of migraine from other causes.

Debbie Shimadry is qualified magnetic therapist and pain nurse specialist. She appears on several BBC radio stations as an expert guest on magnetic therapy and is also the managing director of leading magnetic therapy company worldofmagnets.co.uk. Have Your Mocha and Fat Loss Too

Writen by Lynn VanDyke

You have made a commitment to lose 10 pounds in the next 2 months. You are eating well and working out regularly. You are committed in every way possible- except 1. Your specialty coffee drink of choice. Mochas, frappuccinos, breves and everything in between. You just cannot give up your daily cup of mocha madness.

I don’t blame you. In fact I think the moment you begin to deprive yourself of anything you start a vicious cycle. You start craving the one thing you told yourself you cannot have. So what if we stop denying ourselves of our heavenly coffee drinks? Is it possible to still be on a diet and drink mochas?

Yes, it absolutely is. And I am living proof that you can still indulge and have a fabulous body. I admit that I drink one mocha beverage per day. So if I can do it, you can do it to. Go ahead you have my permission!

But before you run out the door and order 4 venti mocha fraps you should know a few other things. I think that allowing yourself a treat is good and necessary for long term success. The very first thing I think you should do is this- stop dieting. A diet implies negative emotions. It implies that you are restricting your calories and your joy. It also implies that you are going to stop eating according to the diet at some point. After all, who wants to diet all of their life? Not me.

So let’s stop dieting. Let’s make a lifestyle change. Let’s focus more on things we should eat instead of things we should not eat. Let’s focus on all of our accomplishments and not on our failures. In fact, we do not even have failures. We simply had times when we were not as successful as we would have hoped. Let’s also get a few other things in place.

Here are 5 tips to fat loss. Incorporate each of these 5 tips into your new lifestyle change. I know that you will see results. You will feel better, happier, and healthier. You will have more energy and more self-esteem. You will feel good about your body because you are living a clean and healthy life. Here are the 5 tips to fat loss-

1) Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Each meal should be 2-3 hours apart. Each meal should contain one protein and one carb. The first meal should be eaten within an hour after waking.

2) Drink a glass of water at each meal.

3) Rest properly. This means taking at least 48 hours between strength training the same muscles, and it also means getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Lastly, it means taking 1-2 days off from exercising per week.

4) Cardio should be done at different intensity levels and different session lengths. Consider doing a low intensity/long session, a high intensity/short session and a few medium intensity/medium length sessions. Working at varying intensity levels will ensure a well-rounded routine.

5) Strength train each muscle 1-3 times per week. You should lift a proper weight and perform the proper amount of sets/reps for your strength training method. Strength training is not hard once you have an excellent routine in place. Focus on proper form and a full range of motion.

All of the above tips combined will result in fat loss. Now that we are living a healthy life and not dieting we can let go of all guilt. So long as you follow these 5 tips to fat loss then you can have a non-fat venti mocha with whipped cream. The key is moderation. The secret to long-term success is to eat well, workout often and never, ever deprive yourself of your mocha.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #24

Writen by Tami Close

I’ve been so incredibly blessed with attracting wonderful people in my life? In my meditation, I’ve been asking to attract a MasterMind group of like-minded women. Guess what happened a month ago? I was asked to join a MasterMind group. We never know when something is going to show up that we’ve asked for, we just know it is. These women are absolutely wonderful!!

We get together once a week in the early morning over the telephone and use http://www.freeconference.com. It’s a free service, and the only thing you pay for is the cost of the call.

Here’s the basics on the format. We check in with each other and are allotted a few minutes to talk about our week. We keep the tone positive. Even if a member is experiencing some issues, she is allowed to say it, and the group offers support and encouragement. This process is done quickly.

We then move into a meditation. After this the meditation, each individual sets her intention for what she wants to work on in the upcoming week. We laugh a lot during the call and close with a great big WAHOO!!

We all had not met in person so we decided to meet last week at a place called La La Land Chocolates. Yup, it was exactly what the name said. You felt like you were in La La Land with the home-made chocolates they served with lunch. After the lunch, they brought you even more chocolatefondue to dip your fruit in. Talk about temptation. I took one tiny bite of chocolate and it did taste really good. I will be honest.I did inhale.. a lot and actually did get high. Yup, I was in La La Land.

We dressed up and wore hats. They all had sophisticated hats. I had my skirt and heels on and wore my beanie with “I Don’t Want to Grow Up” on it. I looked radiant, and felt like a Ya Ya!!

I got a little teary during the lunch as I mentioned that I had been asking for this group to come into my life and was feeling so blessed. One woman mentioned that she heard my call and was simply responding. That’s exactly how it works. Pretty phenomenal, right?

Wouldn’t it be great if you had access to a MasterMind group of like-minded people? Ask and it will show up. I will hold this intention for you too. Just imagine what a group of people who are like-minded can do for each other. When two are gathered in my name.the miracles are endless! Your MasterMind group is waiting for you.

I love and appreciate you so much.

Love and hugs,

Tami

7 IBS Treatment Tips

Writen by Peter Wallander

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects millions of people in the United States alone, for these people, living with this issue can be uncomfortable at best and debilitating in its worst moments. While there is no actual IBS treatment perse, there are methods that can be utilized to help manage the symptoms that are experienced. The following information will give you some ideas to choose from to put control of this disease, instead of the other way around.

1- Before you decide to use any type of alternative IBS treatment, it is important that you consult your physician. This is the only way to determine if you are healthy enough to forgo some of the drug treatments that are also available for your use. This is an important step whenever you are considering any type of major change to your current lifestyle.

2- In a recent, small, independent study, it was shown that 71% of the participants had a reduction of IBS symptoms when they began taking capsules of peppermint oil. It has long been passed down through generations that peppermint soothed an upset stomach and for some IBS sufferers, it alleviates their symptoms also.

3- Changing your diet to exclude animal products might also be a wise choice when thinking of IBS treatments to try. Many animal products, including milks, cheeses and meats are hard for the body to digest and can cause IBS symptoms to flare-up.

4- Stress can be a huge factor to consider when trying to control your IBS symptoms. Stress can do odd things to the human body and IBS is certainly one of them. It has been estimated that 60% of IBS patients benefit from hypnosis to lessen the stress of daily life. Many people also report a diminished stress level with the use of acupuncture; the lower stress level tends to lead to lower instances of IBS also.

5- Cutting foods that are known to cause gassiness is also an excellent way for many people with IBS to avoid some symptoms. For example, cutting the amount of broccoli, cabbage and some beans is a great IBS treatment option. Since gas is a large factor in much of the pain that is associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, anything that cuts the amount of gas is helpful in combating this painful condition.

6- There is also a growing group of IBS patients that rely on a weekly enema of water to help ease their IBS systems. While this may not be on the top of your personal list of IBS treatment options, it may be helpful to keep in the back of your mind for later.

7- As with anything, it is important for you to thoroughly research any of the above IBS treatment options. You need to know how they will affect your medical condition as well as your personal life. It might be wise to join a support group in your area also; this will put you in touch with other people who are also seeking IBS treatments.

Bipolar: Between a Mother and a Son

Writen by Terry Coyier

This world affords an abundance of challenges for every parent. Society’s standards are ever increasing, yet the day remains a mere twenty-four hours. Juggling different schedules, activities and meals, while trying to cultivate a child’s self-esteem can seem overwhelming at times. Does this sound familiar? Now, imagine adding a mood disorder to the equation. Both my son and I share the same diagnosis: bipolar disorder (manic/depression). It makes our world a bit more chaotic, but we still manage to make it through each day. More importantly, we have an extremely close relationship.

At the age of twenty-seven, I experienced a mental breakdown brought on by the death of my grandfather. First I was told I had major depressive disorder. Generally, people with bipolar only seek treatment when they are depressed; therefore, they are often misdiagnosed. For many people, it takes years to get a proper diagnosis. I was lucky. Not six months later, I had a severe manic episode. This changed my diagnosis to bipolar. It made more sense to me because I had always been moody, even as a child. I began taking medication immediately. Once stabilized, I remained so for over three years. Nonetheless, in May of 2002, I ceased working. I have since been placed and remain on Social Security Disability (SSI).

My son was born just after I turned thirty. It was the happiest moment of my life. He was beautiful and healthy. However, as he grew older, I noticed he couldn’t concentrate on simple tasks and he was extremely fidgety most of the time. He also had trouble sleeping. These symptoms are often associated with early onset bipolar disorder. I knew that bipolar could be hereditary, so I took him to see a child psychiatrist.

His behavior initially fit the criteria for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We decided to treat it with medication. In the following six months, I realized he was crying several times a day for no apparent reason. I spoke to his doctor, who agreed this wasn’t typical four-year-old behavior. We added an antidepressant to combat the problem. After another six months, I started to notice that his crying had turned to frustration and fits of rage. Even with medication, he began sleeping as little as four or five hours a night; waking me up at 3:00 AM by jumping on my bed. He said completely inappropriate things at any given moment, in any situation. His behavior was unpredictable, and eventually he was suspended from daycare for hitting one of his teachers. Once again, I consulted with the doctor. We decided to add a mood stabilizer while decreasing, and eventually stopping, the ADHD medications.

While my son and I have managed to cope with this disorder, our experience raised a difficult question – how do I explain to my son he has a complicated condition, which requires him to take pills daily? When he first went to the doctor, I explained to him that his brain didn’t always work the way it was supposed to, and the pills would help. It was a simple enough explanation that he seemed to grasp. When he misbehaved, he would tell me that his brain told him to do it. This would usually happen after he experienced a complete meltdown. His meltdowns consist of: letting out high-pitched screams, crying, trying to run away from me, throwing anything he can get his hands on, hitting anything near him, (including people), and crawling underneath things. Prior to medication, it would take hours for him to calm down; now he can regain control within approximately a half hour.

One day, following one of his meltdowns, I did my best to explain to him that I understood his feelings because I was bipolar as well. He seemed shocked when I told him that Mommy didn’t always have control over her emotions either. Most children think their parents don’t understand what they are going through. I felt it was important for him to know I understood, and I wasn’t perfect either. I clearly make mistakes on a regular basis and think it’s good that he sees them. I always make sure to apologize when my errors involve him. This way he won’t be raised with the misguided notion that when he becomes an adult he will suddenly become perfect.

Our daily challenges mirror those of most families raising a child. He wants to stay up past his bedtime, isn’t happy when he doesn’t get his way, is grumpy when he’s tired, is careless with his toys, loses things, plays too rough sometimes, doesn’t want to eat all of his vegetables, wants to watch too much television, etc. I, like most parents, have learned different ways to persuade and barter with him so that he still has fun, yet follows the rules I have in place. The one thing I am careful about is not punishing him for his meltdowns. These are beyond his control and he suffers enough just working through one.

Similar to other children, his life also has many positive attributes. He plays baseball and swims. He has a charming personality, loves animals, and is a people pleaser. He’s creative, smart, and extremely affectionate.

However, he is different in many ways. He can be happy one minute, running around laughing at nothing in particular and then, without provocation, angry and growling the next minute. He tries to tell adults how to do things. Sometimes, he tells me he is as smart as God. He has a problem with pressured speech, which causes him to stutter frequently. He doesn’t easily adapt to new surroundings. He must be gently coaxed into attempting something he’s never tried before. Once he tries it, he will usually acclimate to the situation, but often it requires a long period of adjustment. This may not sound different from many other shy children, but more often than not, he becomes frustrated and completely melts down before becoming comfortable. His life can be exceedingly rigorous and, after a meltdown, we always talk about it in depth. I try to help him understand what happened and why he needs to practice his coping skills when he becomes upset or frustrated.

Just as he is different from other children, I am different from other parents. My medication does not keep me as stable as I would like; therefore, I still experience mood swings from time to time. My son must deal with these, which is asking a tremendous amount from a six-year-old. He is very understanding and seems to sense when I am depressed or manic. When I’m down he will play quietly while I rest. When I’m manic and not sleeping well, he tends to wake up in the middle of the night and will come ask me when I’m going to bed. This serves as a gentle reminder, helping me realize that I’m off-balance. We’ve been lucky so far in that we have never been depressed or manic at the same time.

While bipolar disorder manifests differently in each person, it also carries many similarities. I recognize that my son has special needs and he, in turn, realizes I do as well. Somehow we’ve managed to help each other. Our relationship is something that extends beyond the love of a parent and a child – it’s a deep, empathetic understanding shared by two people who suffer from the same illness. Watching my son grow from an infant into a little boy makes me feel magnificent, especially as he overcomes personal obstacles. On the other hand, parenting is frustrating at times. When he is having a meltdown and I cannot reach him, I feel helpless and heartbroken. I realize that every parent must let a child face the trials that life offers, but his exceed the scope of common challenges. As parents know, it is excruciating to watch your child suffer. I simply try my hardest to be the best mom possible to a unique little boy struggling to grow up in today’s demanding environment.

Benefits of Jobst, Sigvaris, and Mediven Gradient Compression Socks & Stockings for Men and Women

Writen by Derek Gaskins

Are you interested in the benefits of gradient compression therapy stockings?

Compression therapy means wearing socks or stockings that are specially designed to support your veins and increase circulation in your legs. The socks or stockings, manufactured by Jobst, Sigvaris and Mediven and available on many online retailers are typically applied first thing in the morning before swelling and discomfort begins, and removed at night. Throughout the day, the compression they provide prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, thereby helping overall circulation.

Remember that the heart fights gravity as it attempts to pump blood up the veins of the legs. As a person walks, the regular contraction and relaxation of the calf muscles around the veins are necessary to help the heart move blood up the legs efficiently. But it is unlikely that a person will walk continuously throughout the day – most of us sit or stand some of the time. Also, some people have inherited weakness of the vein walls or valves, which create additional challenges to venous circulation. This is why wearing Jobst, Mediven or Sigvaris compression socks or stockings is vital for the treatment of or prevention of varicose veins and other circulatory problems such as venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, edema and more, especially for individuals who are at risk.

Visit the leg health section to learn more of the benefits of gradient compression, the various leg health ailments, and exercises you can do to increase circulation in your legs.

Big "Buts" Sabotage Weight Loss, Health and Fitness(Part 7 of 12)

Writen by Dr. Leslie Van Romer

“Yeah, But I Have to Cook For My Husband”

Many of us women say we would change the way we eat if only we didn’t have to cook for our families. “I would love to change the way I eat, but I have to cook for my family. Preparing two meals? Are you kidding? I don’t have the time.”

Between work and home, women feel lucky to just get the shopping done and one half-way decent meal on the table, much less two.

There is no doubt that if you feel like you have to prepare favorite foods for your husband and/or children, then it is a bit challenging to change your own eating habits without trying to change the way your family eatschallenging, but easier than you may think.

The hardest part about eating differently from your family is not the time and energy it takes to make the meals. The hardest part is preventing the prepared food that you also like, but are trying not to eat, from flying into your mouth.

It actually takes very little extra time and effort to eat correctly, no matter what your family eats.

A commonly prepared American dinner is a meat- or fish-centered meal with a vegetable salad (hopefullythey need to eat raw, fresh vegetables too) and side dishes of vegetables, including potatoes. Prepare the exact same meal for you and your family.

While they are contently eating the usual fare, you will center your meal on the salad and vegetables. In fact, if you truly fill up on these foods, then you will have little desire for the meat part of the meal. If you do indulge, you will eat a smaller portion.

Simple. Your family is happy. You are happy because you are getting your life in line with your noble intentions of adopting better eating habits for weight loss and maintenance, health, and fitness.

It’s true that your taste buds may feel a bit neglected for a while, but, if you are patient, they will change to enjoy the best-for-you foods.

Cystic Acne – Putting the Best Face on It

Writen by Mark Walters

Cystic acne treatment is best tackled after a clear understanding of acne and its roots. There are many forms of acne – a skin condition that is often referred to as having pimples or zits. Acne is caused by bacteria that develop in the follicles of your skin, most often your facial skin. Acne can be mild or severe, its discomfort ranging from moderately annoying to scarring, with psychological repercussions.

Cystic acne is acne in its severe form, where the acne has formed cysts that are filled with pus. This cystic acne can scar your skin, especially if you pick at it or squeeze the pus from its cysts.

The best starting point for your cystic acne treatment is a clear skin methodology which is the standard treatment for any type of acne. This regimen is very specific and often results in noted diminishment of acne. This cystic acne treatment requires specific supplies. Benzoyl peroxide is the primary ingredient in this cystic acne treatment, but you must start with a low dose of this in your cystic acne treatment as it can have a harsh effect on your skin and cause redness.

You’ll need a good over the counter cleanser for your cystic acne treatment. This cleanser should be gentle and not too drying. You don’t want to strip your skin of all its oils. Experts suggest that you never use standard bath soap.

Next on you list of cystic acne treatments is a face moisturizer. This must be used every day to counteract the reddening and drying effect of the benzoyl peroxide part of your cystic acne treatment. The best choice in moisturizer would be a sunscreen that is not comedogenic and also has moisturizing effects. Eucerin Skin Renewal, for example, is terrific at prevent your skin from flaking, although you may not want to use it until you’ve been treating your cystic acne treatment for two or more weeks. It contains lactic acid and can sting your skin when first used in conjunction with the benzoyl peroxide.

Make a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream or gel part of your cystic acne treatment. If your face is generally quite sensitive you should apply the benzoyl peroxide only once a day for the first couple of weeks of your cystic acne treatment, gradually increasing its use as your skin learns to tolerate it.

Should your skin become crusty or otherwise indicate an allergy to benozyl peroxide (though rare, it does happen) of course you would discontinue its use as part of your cystic acne treatment.)

Don’t dispair! You can fight back against cystic acne.
