Anti-Aging: Part 4 – Change Your Mind Toward the Youth

Writen by Patricia Little

Romans 12:2 “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Anti-aging interest belongs solely to the man in the street. Every living item has a season of growth, perfection, beauty or fulfillment whether it be the orange on the tree, the new car in the garage, the lion in the jungle. Only man can extend the quality by choice. .

Once this chosen season has passed each item will decline at a rate according to the assigned life time. All originated from the same Creator but the special benefit assigned to the man in the street included in the production a powerful component not always used to its fullest capacity.

Anti-aging works even better from within. Massive change can come to a body whose mind has been renewed without one pill or prescription.

The instructions are simple but require appropriate regular and believing exercise.

Correct and regular application guarantees changes never thought possible. Major improvements to health and happiness can open a door to present a well made, happy, strong body looking far more youthful than its non practicing counterparts.

Many bodies that have past 50 may reward themselves with a fast, trendy car that receives far more anti-aging processes than the owner.

A few simple exercises every day will ensure enjoyment of the reward as well as quality of life far above that provided to the lower creation.

Depression strikes more women than men and is often a series of rapid cycling into mania and the deepest and darkest elements of depression. What makes matters worse is that people don’t realize why they are depressed and because they can’t seem to pin point it then they simply push it aside and accept it enabling the depression to get the upper hand in the depressed individual’s life.

While you may want to understand why you are depressed, it may be more important to recognize that you have a deeper problem such as depression which is causing you to lose valuable time from work while missing out on a great number of life and family events.

Once you are diagnosed for your depression, you will find that the medication for depression will be helpful but not always right off the bat or with immediate gratifying results. Depression will take a while to control.

While it is important to talk to therapist and psychologists, it is also very important to find the right person to confide in that you know and trust. If you don’t have a trusted friend, then maybe you should consider joining a support group which will enable you to talk freely about your depression. While you may not realize it right off the bat, you likely have a larger support group in your home and you need to use your family to help you get your life back on track.

Read everything you can about your depression. Make sure that you do understand the key terms in depression such as rapid cycling, mania and all the other key terms that you certainly will hear a lot in your therapy sessions. Talk openly and honestly to your therapist and make sure that you and your therapist have the same ideas for your depression treatment. Don’t settle for a depression treatment plan that you don’t understand or more importantly, don’t want to follow. There are options and you have several of them when it comes to your own mental health.

ankle sprains a physical therapists perspective

Ankle Sprains – A Physical Therapists Perspective

Writen by Brad Gilden

Introduction Sprained ankles are one of the leading causes of athletes to miss games during the season. Many times they are taped up & rushed back to the field without proper rehabilitation. More often than not, the ankle gets re-injured or worse, they end up with a knee, hip or low back injury. These injuries can be prevented by providing the proper healing time and rehabilitation. The same premise holds true for non-athletes. I have worked with a number of patients that have had multiple ankle sprains that were never given the opportunity to fully rehabilitate. The most common complaint is that their ankle turns over at any time without warning. All it takes is a slight bend in the pavement and the ankle turns. This type of injury is frustrating and can become debilitating. This article discusses the different types of ankle sprains, what to do following a sprain, and what does rehabilitation of the ankle involve?

Brief Anatomy The ankle is made up of three primary bones. The tibia & fibula, which are the longs bones of the lower leg and the talus which is a major bone of the foot. Together they make up the talocrural joint. The mobility of these bones allows the foot to flex and extend which is required for propulsion during walking. The other major joint of the ankle is formed by the lower portion of the talus and the upper portion of the calcaneus (heel bone). These two bones form what is called the subtalar joint, which allows for movement in and out (inversion/eversion). This inversion motion is the most common mechanism of injury. The ligaments are tissues that connect bone to bone. Their function is to provide stability to the joint. There are three main ligaments on the outside of the ankle called the lateral collateral ligaments. Their function is to prevent the ankle from inverting too far. The inside of the ankle is protected by the deltoid ligament, which functions to prevent excessive eversion or turning out.

Mechanism of injury – The most typical ankle sprain is an inversion sprain. This occurs when the ankle turns inward and the bodies weight compresses the ankle brining the lateral malleolus close to the floor. This excessive movement places the lateral ligaments on strain, stretches the tendons crossing the joint and can also lead to some of the tarsal bones compressing on one another. The greater the inversion force results in a more severe ankle sprain or fracture. For the purposes of this article, I will only be covering ankle sprains, not fractures.

What is the difference between a sprain and a strain? This is a common question. A sprain results from a stress placed upon a ligament. Remember a ligament connects one bone to another bone. A sprain is a partial or full tear in the ligament or at the junction of where the ligament attaches to the bone. A strain results from an excessive force or overload on a muscle leading to micro-tears in the muscle belly or tendon. A tendon is a tissue similar in strength to a ligament that connects a muscle to the bone. Both ligaments and tendons are non-contractile tissue. Only muscle has the ability to contract (shorten).

Grading an ankle sprain There are three different grades of an ankle sprain based on the severity of the injury.

Grade I (1st degree)- This is the most common type of sprain. The ligaments are overstretched but no visible tear has occurred. Microscopic tears have occurred that will heal if treated properly. Minimal swelling should occur and only minor ankle instability will be present.
Grade II (2nd degree)- This is a more severe injury and the ligament has sustained a partial tear. The ankle will typically be more swollen and ecchymosis (bruising) will usually occur. The ankle will be more unstable and painful compared to a grade I.
Grade III (3rd degree)- This is the most severe injury as the ligament has been completely torn. This is the most painful ankle sprain and will typically present as very hot and swollen with a lot of ecchymosis sometimes tracking halfway up the lower leg.
Immediate care following ankle sprain – Following a turned ankle, it is difficult to determine the severity based on a number of factors. Swelling may occur immediately making the injury seem worse than it actually is. If the ankle does not swell, this does not necessarily minimize the possibility of torn ligaments. Tenderness will usually be present on the outside of the ankle with an inversion sprain. It also may be difficult to stand on the injured foot. The safest advice would be to keep the shoe/sneaker tied tight to prevent the ankle from swelling. Keep the weight off the foot as much as possible. When the shoe is taken off, the leg should be elevated above the heart and an ice pack should be compressed against the ankle. This will help decrease both the pain and swelling. This technique is called R.I.C.E standing for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. R.I.C.E is a good pneumonic for any injury to the extremities.

Should I go to the hospital? If you are having difficulty putting weight on the foot, if the swelling is severe, and the pain has not reduced after a few hours of using the R.I.C.E technique, a visit to the hospital is recommended. Prepare to wait in the emergency room for a while. Ankle sprains are not usually treated as a priority. The doctor will examine the ankle looking for joint and ligament instabilities. He/She may also order an X-ray to check for fractures. On occasion, an MRI will be ordered to assess ligament damage.

Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation It is common following an ankle sprain to be placed on crutches. More severe sprains are placed in a boot or air cast to help with ankle stability. There are four major categories of impairments that occur following an ankle sprain. These include 1. Ankle joint instability due to weakened ligamentous structures 2. Muscle weakness 3. Poor balance (proprioception) 4. Pain and swelling. Each of these impairments must be addressed for a successful rehabilitation. Physical therapists will utilize various massage techniques and modalities to reduce inflammation. Manual therapy techniques will be used to restore normal joint mechanics and to retrain the proper muscle firing patterns necessary for stability. An effort is required to normalize your walking (gait) as quickly as possible to prevent compensations. Finally, a specific strengthening program that incorporates the entire lower extremity and core muscles is provided to improve overall strength, balance and coordination. Each ankle sprain is different from the next & everybody heals at a different rate. Typically, rehabilitation following an ankle sprain can be as short as two weeks (4 visits) up to eight weeks (20 visits). This does not take into account any other co-morbidities.

Conclusion Ankle sprains if managed properly through physical therapy and a conscious effort to comply with a home exercise program are usually rehabilitated very successfully with low chance of re-injury. However, if an ankle sprain is not fully rehabilitated, the chances of re-injury with more severe damage increase greatly.

Bad Breath Treatment

Writen by Milos Pesic

Bad breath can be a great source of embarrassment and shame, not only for the person affected but also for the person who is unfortunate enough to take on the role of telling that person that he or she has bad breath. Fortunately, there are many bad breath treatments available from home remedies to supplements that help aid digestion.

The first step in treating bad breath, of course, is practicing good oral hygiene. In fact, one of the main reasons why bad smelling breath develops is because people don’t take good care of their mouth.

Brushing your teeth regularly and flossing are one important step in bad breath treatment. Another is to get regular dentist check-ups in order to identify and correct problems that may lead to bad breath, including gum disease, carious teeth, faulty restorations, overhanging fillings and leaking crowns. All of these serve as food traps, encouraging bacteria growth, which in turn causes bad breath.

Now, in addition to good oral hygiene, bad breath treatments may also include:

Sugarless Gums and Lozenges

Chewing gums or sucking on lozenges will help increase saliva flow and prevent dry mouth, which is one cause of bad breath. It is important that you take only sugarless gums and lozenges in order to minimize acidity in the mouth. Sugar can add to the acidity in your mouth, thereby attracting bacteria to grow.

The saliva acts as your mouth’s natural mouthwash. It removes particles of food and has antibiotic elements that kill off bacteria. By encouraging saliva flow with this particular bad breath treatment, you therefore remove the factors that contribute to bad breath.

Water

If chewing on sugarless gums and lozenges is not enough to increase saliva flow, then increase your intake of fluids, especially water. Water therapy is one good bad breath treatment that will cost you just about nothing and yet is effective in solving the problem. Drink at least eight glasses of water every day to help with basic metabolic function and to keep the mouth moist. This will help hold bacterial flora at bay.

Vitamin C Deficiency, and Tobacco

These two are actually major contributive factors to bad breath. It has been frequently observed that persons with a deficiency in vitamin C tend to develop bad breath. Vitamin C supplements are therefore recommended as bad breath treatment.

Additionally, the nicotine in tobacco products like cigarettes can destroy vitamin C, thus leading to a deficiency in this nutrient. Smokers should therefore take vitamin C supplements to treat bad breath.

If supplementation is not an option for you, then consider snacking on carrots, celery, or other vegetables that are rich in vitamin C. Not only will this help keep plaque from forming, but it will also help increase your intake of vitamin C.

Benefits And Importance Of Yoga For Elderly

Writen by Kevin Pederson

Time and again we have been saying Yoga is not too old or too young for anyone. The sooner you start its better, but if you haven’t had your time of glory in young age then you still can do it at your current age. Age, Sex, Religion, Race, Caste or Creed is no bar with yoga. You will only gain from it and not loose anything in life.

With the increasing age people have stopped doing their routine exercise which is totally wrong. By exercising or doing yoga you tend to get younger by age and heart. Age should never be a hindrance. It is very important that you continue the old lifestyle with control on your diet. Life gets to be very simple and easy to live in.

Make sure to consult your doctor if you are starting these yoga poses for the first time. Yoga not only has asana but other techniques such as breathing and meditation. It is a combination of all three which are very important. Pranayam is one of the basic exercises which everyone would start with. These are very simple and easy to do exercises. Meditation is also very helpful as it removes your stress and would get you to a place you could hardly know about.

These can cure many illnesses. A slow and gradual process would help you many ways and make this very simple. The common and simple things you can keep in mind is that, don’t exert yourself, don’t bend too much, take your time and do the poses, whatever you do, see to it that these exercises do not cause pain while doing it.

Kevin Pederson, the webmaster for Yogawiz, mentions the importance of yoga for young as well as old, a boon for many who goes through this stage in their lifetime.

Conquering the Common Cold

Writen by Mari Peckham

What do we know about the Common Cold?

  • No Cure. Antibiotics, designed to knock out bacterial infections, do nothing when it comes to treating a cold.

  • None of us are safe! No matter how strong and healthy we are, an occasional cold will reduce us to whimpering, sneezing, coughing versions of our former selves.

So, what do we do? Lay back with a box of tissue, pop a couple of cold tabs and wait it out? Not necessarily! Doctors who specialize in self-care medicine say that there is a lot more that we can do to get through a cold comfortably, and possibly more quickly! Here is some of the best advice that experts have to offer on the subject.

  • Vitamin C – “Vitamin C works in the body as a scavenger, picking up all sorts of trash – including virus trash,” Says Keith W. Sehnert, M.D., a physician with Trinity Health Care in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “It can shorten the length of a cold from seven days to maybe two or three.”

Studies conducted at the University of Wisconsin found that cold sufferers taking 500 milligrams of vitamin C four times a day suffered from about half as many symptoms (coughing, sneezing. etc) as those not taking the vitamin.

Best way to get it? Drink it! Orange, grapefruit, and cranberry juices are excellent sources of vitamin C.

  • Zinc – Suck on zinc lozenges and cut your cold short, to an average of just 4 days! It also can help reduce symptoms such as dry, irritated throat. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for everyone, but when it works, it works!

  • R and R – Take a day or two off of work, or at least slow down! Extra rest enables your body to focus it’s energy on getting you well.

  • Stay Warm – Keep your immune system cozy by bundling up against the cold. This way your body can use energy to fight your cold instead of protecting you from the cold.

  • Eat Lightly – Eat, but steer clear of foods that put a strain on your body’s metabolism. Eat fewer fatty foods, meat and milk products, and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Chicken Soup – A silly folk remedy? No! Researchers at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach have found that hot chicken soup, either because of its aroma or its taste, “appears to possess an additional substance for increasing the flow of nasal mucus.” Researchers say that this mucus serves as a first line of defense in removing germs from your system, so eat up!

  • Liquids – Drink six to eight glasses of water, juice, tea, and other mostly clear liquids daily to keep the body hydrated and to flush out impurities.

  • NO Smoking! – Smoking aggravates the throat and interferes with the infection-fighting activity of the cilia, the microscopic “fingers” that sweep bacteria out of your lungs and throat. Even if you don’t quit for good, at least stop for the duration of your cold.

  • Salty Gargle – Dr. Van Ert of San Francisco advises mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargling away whenever your throat hurts.

  • Hot Toddy – Get a good night’s sleep and clear a stuffed-up nose by sipping a “hot toddy” or a half a glass of wine before bedtime, suggests Dr. Caughron, a family practitioner specializing in preventive medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia. But don’t go overboard! More alcohol than that can stress out your system and make recovery more difficult.

  • Get Steamed – Clear congestion and relieve a dry cough by taking a hot steamy shower. Or make a steam tent by draping a towel over your head above a bowl of boiling water.

  • Keep Your Germs to Yourself – Cough and blow away, but do it into a disposable tissue instead of sharing them! Then promptly throw the tissue away and wash your hands.

  • Medicate – If you decide to take over the counter medication, follow the instructions carefully and only take medication that addresses the symptoms that you are suffering from.

Looking for alternatives to drugs? Try these herbs and teas that contain special properties that are natural antagonists against colds!

  • Goldenseal and Echinacea – “I recommend herb capsules such as goldenseal and echinacea at the early onset of a cold,” says Elson Haas, M.D. He says that goldenseal stimulates your liver, which helps to clear up infections. Echinacia clean your blood and lymph glands, helping circulate infection-fighting antibodies and removing toxic substances from the body. Try one or two capsules twice a day for up to two weeks.

  • Garlic – Garlic is known for its antibiotic effect and “can actually kill germs and clear up your cold symptoms more rapidly,” says Dr. Haas. He recommends two or three oil-free garlic capsules three times a day.

  • Licorice Root Tea – Dr Van Ert recommends this teas for it’s anesthetizing effects for soothing irritated throats and relieving coughs.

  • Other Teas – Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea, or tea brewed with hops or valarian her, have natural tranquilizing effects that will help you rest. Add a teaspoon of honey, a simple carbohydrate that has a sedative effect.

  • Monolaurian – Dr. Van Ert also recommends this fatty acid (available in capsule form) for it’s antiviral effect. He recommends taking two capsules three times a day with some food, for helping the immune system stay fit to battle the cold virus.

A cold may be something that we have to live with, and through, but finding ways to make the best of it will help you get back on your feet in record time.

How to Create Your Own Natural Skin Care Recipes

Writen by Jerrick Foo

Ever thought of experimenting with your own natural skin care recipes to combat that dry flaky skin?

You have to know that skin basically does everything alone. This means that it can produce enough oil from the sebaceous glands to make it shine and work together perfectly. The problems appear when it becomes dry.

Keeping this in mind there are several solutions you can apply using ingredients already found inside your home or at the local grocery shop.

Remember that what you eat is very important and bad diets or insufficient nutritional ingredients damage every part of the body. To be healthy and have perfect skin a balanced diet is the first factor that has to be taken into consideration. Perfect glowing skin can be achieved.

Have you heard of proteins? Well, they are very important for one’s skin regeneration and repair. Processed food rich in preservatives and salt will take moisture out of your skin. They can also cause the dreaded dry skin everybody is afraid of. Why not eat fish (salmon is the best), turkey, chicken or include in your diet vegetable protein? The all hated vegetables! They contain vegetal protein which is perfect for the body. Avoid frozen food! Vegetables are especially good if fresh.

Why not include in your natural skin care recipes ingredients such as garlic, onions or eggs? The contain Sulfur in a natural form and this substance is very important for the skin. Several multi-vitamins out there also contain sulfur and should be taken into account if your diet is lacking it.

Is your skin cracked? Have you considered being careful that your body receives enough vitamins A and B? Lacks of them cause this. Include in your diet food that contains these vitamins and eat carrots.

Beta-Carotene can be found in them and it’s good not only for your eyes. It plays a significant role in skin care as well.

What you also have to include in your diets number:

* Alpha-Hydroxy acids

* EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids)

* Lactic Acid

* Supplements

* Vitamin E

* Aloe Vera

Another important rule is: Avoid Junk Food! It is simply not good for you from all point of views.

Natural skin care recipes are available everywhere. Some work, some don’t! The best method of choosing one is to ask friends that use them. Also keep in mind that what works for somebody may not work on you! Don’t be discouraged and keep trying.

The best way to keep your skin perfect is by eating healthy and give your body every vitamin and mineral it needs. In most cases there is no need of expensive creams or lotions. A good moisturizer can replace them all if combined with a healthy way of eating.

Jerrick Foo has been researching and developing all dry skin care the purpose of offering men and women safe, dry skin care tips. He have created Dry Skin Care Guide to share his 10 years of combined expertise with you. Visit http://www.dry-skin-care-guide.com for essential skin care tips.

Anti- Aging – The Truth About Getting a Stronger Body and Mind

Writen by Patricia Little

This is your big opportunity to begin your anti-aging program

The truth about getting a stronger body and mind has not changed in nearly 100 years.

A great many women query how is it possible to follow such a haphazard way, put forward by famous author Horace Fletcher, of eating in a home without upsetting the whole routine of the household or disturbing the needs of each member? Having a family eating haphazardly would be expensive and tedious.

Horace Fletcher – you can find a free copy of his complete work on this subject in the link at the end of this article, responds with this : The possible disturbance to domestic regularity and convenience, because of the difficulty of supplying different members of the family only when appetite in each case is “just good and ready,” is purely imaginary. Persons of regular occupations will accommodate themselves to the ordinary rhythm of meal schedule easily and naturally, with the difference that they may occasionally skip a meal or two when the ordinary activity has been lessened.

The general experience has been that concentration on one particular meal as ‘the main meal’ either at noon or in the evening, will suit everybody. Individual needs vary enormously and these can be accommodated even at a main meal.

The adoption of Fletcheristic simplicity could certainly change the management of the often complex culinary needs of the household.

Under its influence it’s possible for this work to be done sooner – providing physical relief and more time for healthful recreation.

A stronger body and mind to embrace new and challenging business pursuits would be a major benefit. That would do wonders for your anti-aging program.

Just as important as the meal timing and amount is awareness of the often forgotten requirement for personal care.

Each body is ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ and requires that special level of respect and superior care more often lovingly and regularly given to a four legged friend.

Practice these food consumption truths and you will get a stronger mind and body as you implement your own anti-aging program.

beauty dont let your eyes deceive you

Beauty – Don’t Let Your Eyes Deceive You

Writen by Michael Russell

Would we really know it if we saw it. Does it exist in life or only in our minds. As humans we place labels on so many things. Maybe that’s why living together is so tough. We are so accustomed to putting people into groups, that we hardly get to know each other as individuals. How are we to judge anything, when so much of who and what we are is clouded in our own particular shade of life. To accurately judge something, we’d have to be of open mind and soul, but we’re humans.

I guess that’s why they say “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. We look at the same object, yet see it so differently. Are our lives, our experiences, so frozen within our being, that it affects the way we see color, light or grey. Have we forsaken so much of what we could’ve become and settled for a body that uses less then 10% of its brain. Do we deserve to have any say on any object that isn’t immediately relevant to us. Who are we to hand out praise or rejection, as if our observation is some how the gospel.

So what is beauty? Can you see it? Can you touch it? Is it something that we know or something that we feel. There are so many things we call beautiful, but why? There aren’t any concrete facts to go by that show us what is and isn’t beauty. Maybe beauty isn’t real, but abstract. Like when you want someone to like you; you’ll take whatever they say, even a simple hello and project it to mean more than it really does. Maybe beauty is nothing more than a projection of our desires. We want things to be as we perceive them and it doesn’t matter if that’s the way they really are.

If you found beauty, what would you do with it? Would you put it on display for all the world to see and admire and envy. Or would you lock it in a room, suffocate it and only bring it out to suit your needs. Could you handle having beauty or would it change you. Would you be able to accept the responsibility of knowing the whole world wanted what you had. As humans, are we mature enough to add beauty to our life, or would it become our life?

We only seem sure of what we want, when we don’t have it, but once we have it, we have no clue about what to do with it. Yes, beauty is a nice concept, but we have to know that since we see it in so many things, that it really only exist in our minds. All those objects that we see beauty in, is nothing more than projections of a preconceived mind. Beauty isn’t beauty unless we say it’s so, it doesn’t have the ability to become beauty on its own. We think beauty is a part of reality, but in reality, beauty is only a part of what we think.

Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Beauty
